Mitt Romney, First Lady Stump for Votes in Swing State Iowa

The Washington Post reported Monday that Mitt Romney campaigned in Davenport, Iowa, where he told a crowd that he was optimistic about America's future. He said, "I wouldn't be doing what I've been doing if I were a pessimist, all right? This job is quite an undertaking. It's a thrill to get to do what I get to do."

Here are some of the latest developments from the Hawkeye State. Iowa's six electoral votes are being sought by both presidential campaigns.

* First Lady Michelle Obama campaigned in Iowa City, Iowa, Monday, where she discussed Hurricane Sandy. She said that President Barack Obama "has made this storm his priority, and he is going to do whatever it takes to make sure the American people are safe and secure," according to CNN Monday.

* The Associated Press reported Sunday that Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Fort Dodge, Iowa, Thursday.

* Iowa is one of three swing states, along with Wisconsin and Ohio, where GOP supporters have up to a 3-to-2 advantage in local TV ad spending, according tot The New York Times Sunday.

* Real Clear Politics' latest cumulative averaging of polls shows that Obama leads Romney in Iowa by 2.3 points, 49 percent to 46.7 percent (through Monday night).

* Bloomberg News reported Monday that through Oct. 27, the secretary of state's office reported that more than 470,000 early votes have been cast by Iowans, which would be 30 percent of the amount of Iowans who voted four years ago. Democrats lead currently with 44.6 percent of the votes cast, while Republicans have cast 32 percent of the early votes. Independents currently make up 23.3 percent of the early votes.

* The Hill reported Sunday that Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager, deemed the Des Moines Register's endorsement of Mitt Romney as not "based at all in reality" on "This Week." She added "It says that he'd reach across the aisle, which he'd do the exact opposite. It's the exact opposite of what he did in Massachusetts."

* Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad's communication director, Tim Albrecht, deemed the Des Moines Register's endorsement for Romney as one that "will send absolute shockwaves through this race," as reported by The Washington Post's Right Turn Monday.

Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. due back at Mayo Clinic for more tests

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Embattled U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., who is being treated for bipolar disorder, will return to the Mayo Clinic this week for a re-evaluation by his doctors, his father, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, said on Sunday.

The civil rights leader and former presidential candidate did not give a specific day when his son, a nine-term Illinois Democrat, would return to the clinic, or say whether he would be re-admitted to the facility.

"That has not yet been determined. It's a re-evaluation of his status and that will then determine what should happen," the elder Jackson told Reuters.

Congressman Jackson, 47, was treated for at least six weeks at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, this summer for bipolar disorder, a psychological condition marked by extreme mood swings, and has been on medical leave from the House of Representatives since June.

Since leaving the hospital last month to continue his recovery at home in Washington, the lawmaker has been seeing two doctors a day and "struggling with his own desire to get back to his work, which ... seems to be premature if he does not have strength to handle that challenge," his father said.

The younger Jackson made his first public statement about his absence in an automated "robocall" to constituents on Saturday, saying he was anxious to return to work.

"But at this time, it's against medical advice. And while I will always give my all to my constituents, I ask you to continue with your patience as I work to get my health back," he said.

Jackson's congressional office confirmed on Wednesday that he remains on the ballot for the November 6 election, which he is favored to win. He has not been campaigning for the heavily Democratic Chicago-area seat he has held since 1995.

In addition to his health issues, Jackson has been the subject of a congressional ethics committee probe over an alleged bribe offered by a Jackson supporter in 2008 to then Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

The bribe was said to be intended to entice Blagojevich into appointing Jackson to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama. Jackson has admitted to lobbying for the seat, but denied knowing about any money offered to Blagojevich, who has since been convicted on corruption charges and imprisoned.

According to news reports citing unnamed sources, Jackson is also under investigation by the FBI over possible misuse of campaign money. The FBI has not confirmed this.

Jackson's Republican challenger, Brian Woodworth, urged voters to pray for Jackson's recovery but said the district needs to elect someone who can be a voice for constituents.

His possible return to the Mayo Clinic shows "he is not getting better and it's another indication that says he's not going to be ready to serve, even when January comes around," Woodworth told Reuters.

Repeated calls to Jackson's congressional and campaign representatives went unanswered. His father said he could not give a timeline on when Jackson would recover and get back to work.

Google could be poised to roll out new Nexus tablet offerings at next Monday's press event in New York City. The search giant is also likely to introduce a new smartphone, the LG Nexus 4, powered by Android 4.2. The timing of the event is certainly interesting, as it comes later on the same day that Microsoft is holding a Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco.

Britain nixes extradition of NASA hacker Gary McKinnon to US

Gary McKinnon, a British citizen, is accused of breaking into nearly 100 US military and NASA computers, looking for photos of UFOs.

The British government today announced that Gary McKinnon, a British hacker with a condition that has been diagnosed as Asperger's syndrome, will not be extradited to the United States. But while the decision is nominally about his human rights, it may also be a byproduct of a longstanding debate over the US-Britain extradition treaty, which British critics say is weighted too much in favor of US interests.

British Home Secretary Theresa May today told the House of Commons that she had withdrawn the extradition order against Mr. McKinnon after determining that extraditing him would violate his human rights, BBC News reports.

Mr McKinnon is accused of serious crimes. But there is also no doubt that he is seriously ill. He has Asperger's syndrome, and suffers from depressive illness. The legal question before me is now whether the extent of that illness is sufficient to preclude extradition.

After careful consideration of all of the relevant material, I have concluded that Mr McKinnon's extradition would give rise to such a high risk of him ending his life that a decision to extradite would be incompatible with Mr McKinnon's human rights.

Ms. May said that it would now be up to the director of public prosecutions to determine whether McKinnon would face charges in Britain.

McKinnon is accused of breaking into nearly 100 NASA and US military computers between 2001 and 2002, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, and is charged in Virginia and New Jersey on eight counts of computer fraud. Lawyers for McKinnon said that he was merely looking for evidence of UFOs and did not have any criminal intent. The Daily Telegraph reported in 2009 that McKinnon's supporters say he is being made a scapegoat for US failures to secure its computers, which McKinnon has called "ridiculously easy" to hack.

US lawyer David Rivkin, an adviser to the Reagan and Bush administrations, told the BBC that the decision to deny extradition for McKinnon?on health grounds was "laughable" and that "under that logic, anybody who claims some kind of physical or mental problem can commit crimes with impunity and get away with it." British solicitor Edward Fitzgerald told The Guardian that he felt McKinnon's case turned on his alleged high suicide risk.

While May said in her statement that the "sole issue" before her was McKinnon's human rights, her decision not to extradite McKinnon comes amid public debate in Britain over the country's extradition responsibilities, particularly those in its treaty with the US.

Critics say that the US-Britain treaty, enacted in 2003, favors US interests over British ones. The Guardian's Owen Bowcott points out that between January 2004 and October 2012, 92 people have been extradited from Britain to the US, while only 43 have made the opposite trip. He also notes, however, that between January 2004 and December 2011, Britain made 57 requests for extradition and 40 extraditions took place, while the US made 134 requests during that same period, and only 75 extraditions occurred.

In announcing her decision on McKinnon, May called the US-Britain treaty "broadly sound," reports The Guardian.? But May added that she would introduce a new "forum bar" to the extradition process, which would allow a court to deny extradition if it deemed a British trial more fair to the accused than a trial overseas, reports The Guardian. May also said that she planned to end the home secretary's ability to deny extradition on human rights grounds ? the very grounds she used to bar McKinnon's extradition ? arguing that such discretion would be better placed in the courts than in the government's hands.?

May's proposed reforms to the US extradition process are just part of a broader overhaul by the British government to its approach to international justice. The Washington Post reports that May also announced that Britain would be?opting out of more than 100 criminal justice measures?with the European Union and reinstating selected measures. The Post writes that the move "appeared aimed at satisfying Conservative lawmakers who have grown increasingly skeptical of the E.U.?s reach in British affairs."

Rice agriculture accelerates global warming: More greenhouse gas per grain of rice

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and rising temperatures cause rice agriculture to release more of the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH4) for each kilogram of rice it produces, new research published in this week's online edition of Nature Climate Change reveals.

"Our results show that rice agriculture becomes less climate friendly as our atmosphere continues to change. This is important, because rice paddies are one of the largest human sources of methane, and rice is the world's second-most produced staple crop," said Dr Kees Jan van Groenigen, Research Fellow at the Botany Department at the School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin, and lead author of the study.

Van Groenigen, along with colleagues from Northern Arizona University and the University of California in Davis, gathered all published research to date from 63 different experiments on rice paddies, mostly from Asia and North America. The common theme in the experiments was that they measured how rising temperatures and extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere affect rice yields and the amount of methane that is released by rice paddies.

The research team used a technique called meta-analysis, a statistical tool for finding general patterns in a large body of experimental data. "Two strong patterns emerged when we analysed all the data: first, more CO2 boosted emissions of methane from rice paddies, and second, higher temperatures caused a decline in rice yields," explained Professor Bruce Hungate of Northern Arizona University and co-author of the study.

Methane in rice paddies is produced by microscopic organisms that respire CO2, like humans respire oxygen. More CO2 in the atmosphere makes rice plants grow faster, and the extra plant growth supplies soil microorganisms with extra energy, pumping up their metabolism. Increasing CO2 levels will also boost rice yields, but to a smaller extent then CH4 emissions. As a result, the amount of CH4 emitted per kilogram of rice yield will increase. Rising temperatures were found to have only small effects on CH4 emissions, but because they decrease rice yield, they also increase the amount of CH4 emitted per kilogram of rice. "Together, higher CO2 concentrations and warmer temperatures predicted for the end of this century will about double the amount of CH4 emitted per kilogram of rice produced.," explained Professor Chris van Kessel of the University of California in Davis and co-author of the study.

"Because global demand for rice will increase further with a growing world population, our results suggest that without additional measures, the total CH4 emissions from rice agriculture will strongly increase..."

However, the authors point out that there are several options available to reduce CH4 emissions from rice agriculture. For instance, management practices such as mid-season drainage and using alternative fertilizers have been shown to reduce CH4 emissions from rice paddies. Moreover, by switching to more heat tolerant rice cultivars and by adjusting sowing dates, yield declines due to temperature increases can largely be prevented, thereby reducing the effect of warming on CH4 emissions per yield. "These findings, together with our own results really stress the need for mitigation and adaptation measures to secure global food supply while at the same time keeping greenhouse gas emissions in check." van Groenigen concluded.

Weekly Ketchup: Live Action Justice League Movie Slated for 2015

This week's Ketchup includes news about new (and potential new) roles for Elizabeth Banks, Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise, Aaron Paul (of Breaking Bad), and Brad Pitt. Also included in the ten story mix are the video game adaptation Need for Speed, a reboot of the Left Behind franchise, another Tyler Perry Alex Cross movie, a remake of Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and two movies based on newspaper comic strips (Heathcliff and The Family Circus).

This Week's Top Story

JUSTICE LEAGUE TO TAKE ON THE AVENGERS 2 IN THE SUMMER OF 2015

This week, Warner Bros won a legal victory against the family of Superman cocreator Joel Shuster. This news led to the studio announcing plans to move ahead with a live action Justice League movie for the summer of 2015. Most are interpreting this is as a standoff with Marvel Studios, which has already announced a release date of May 1st, 2015 for The Avengers 2. Marvel also announced this week a release date of November 6, 2015 for Ant-Man, making it likely to be the first confirmed title as part of Marvel's Phase 3, assuming that Phase 2 ends with The Avengers 2. The horse race between The Avengers 2 and Justice League also gives writers and fans alike an opportunity to discuss every other difference between DC's and Marvel's big screen adaptations. Particularly obvious in this case is the way that Marvel developed their heroes and the Avengers over several films before releasing The Avengers. DC, on the other hand, has never really acknowledged the Justice League in its films, and indeed, the Batman of Justice League will probably be a complete reboot of the character following Christopher Nolan's films. Instead, it appears that Warner Bros plans on using Justice League to help launch other superhero movies, with possibilities including The Flash, Wonder Woman, a Green Lantern reboot, and any other hero that might appear in Justice League. Of course, there's also Man of Steel, the Superman reboot, coming out next summer.

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 TOM CRUISE TO TIME TRAVEL IN OUR NAME IS ADAM

Paramount Pictures is very much in the Tom Cruise business. In addition to the ongoing Mission: Impossible franchise, there's also the upcoming Jack Reacher, and the continuing possiblity of a Top Gun 2. Then, this week, Cruise attached himself to a time travel science fiction script called Our Name is Adam written by as-yet-unproduced relative newcomer T.S. Nowlin. There's no firm details about Our Name is Adam just yet, except that it's about a man who travels back in time to visit his younger self, and it's being compared to Back to the Future (because almost no one ever compares their project to movies that weren't huge successes). Anyway, not long after that news broke out, it was revealed that Paramount Pictures is now in negotiations to acquire that project, which, like this article stated, is another opportunity for Paramount Pictures to continue their Tom Cruise partnership. At other studios, Cruise is also attached to the reboot of Van Helsing for Universal Pictures, and the remake of The Magnificent Seven for MGM.

#2 BRAD PITT AND DAVID FINCHER MAY REUNITE A FOURTH TIME FOR 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA

As part of their deal with David Fincher to direct the remake of their adaptation of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Walt Disney Pictures has put a three month hold on the director while they figure out if they're ready for a greenlight. To help the process along, David Fincher is looking for his star, and it looks like his first pick is Brad Pitt, who has worked with Fincher three times previous (Seven, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). If Brad Pitt signs on, he would be playing sailor Ned Land, the same role played by Kirk Douglas in Disney's 1954 live action adaptation. As for what Disney has to consider, balancing out the allure of Brad Pitt as the star, there is the ambitious technical side, which Fincher has said will include filming in 3D and a production schedule that is about 70% CGI special effects. This is obviously not the first time Disney has had to tussle with an expensive period piece action movie, following such recent examples as John Carter and the upcoming reboot of The Lone Ranger. As for Captain Nemo himself, this writer would like to humbly suggest that Disney look no farther than their subsidiary ABC, the TV show LOST, and British-Indian actor Naveen Andrews. He would certainly make more sense than James Mason.

#3 CASTING THE GUY FROM BREAKING BAD HAS TO BE SOME SORT OF IRONY FOR A MOVIE CALLED NEED FOR SPEED

A lot of video game adaptation movies based on popular franchises get announced, and then nothing ever seems to happen with them (see: World of Warcraft, Metal Gear Solid, HALO, etc.). This story is quite the opposite, because it wasn't that long ago that we first heard about Electronic Arts licensing out the film rights to the racing series Need for Speed to DreamWorks, and already, that movie has a star. Aaron Paul, who's won two Emmy Awards for his role as Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, has been cast as one of the two leads in Need for Speed. The script by screenwriter John Gatins and his brother George Gatins isn't based on any one game in particular, but just tries to capture the game in general. So, basically, it just has to be a movie about cars going fast, and it fits those requirements. John Gatins' previous credits include cowriting Coach Carter and Real Steel, and he also wrote the upcoming Robert Zemeckis/Denzel Washington drama Flight. Need for Speed will mark the second feature film for director Scott Waugh, who made his debut earlier in 2012 with Act of Valor. DreamWorks is aiming to get Need for Speed in production in early 2013 in time for a release date of February 7, 2014. This story is a "fresh development" mostly because it's all about Aaron Paul, and how his career might take off into movies, post-Breaking Bad.

#4 SHAILENE WOODLEY LANDS THE LEAD IN THE HUNGER GAMES-ISH YA NOVEL ADAPTATION DIVERGENT

Just as Twilight led to several other YA series about teen girls, vampires, and supernatural creatures, The Hunger Games helped inspire a new wave of YA novels set in futuristic dystopian societies. One of those books (arguably) was Divergent by Veronica Roth, which is about a future divided into five different concepts (Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite), and all 16-year-olds have to choose one of those and get tested to see if they fit in with those societies. Summit/Lionsgate (the same studio behind The Hunger Games) is now moving forward with a film adaptation of Roth's first book (which will eventually be a trilogy). It is 20 year old Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) who Summit/Lionsgate is now in talks with about playing the film's lead role of Tris. It was just last week that Woodley also made news for being Sony's top choice to be the new Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Filming is expected to start soon under the direction of Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless, The Lucky Ones).

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#5 JIM CARREY MIGHT ROB ARMORED CARS IN THE COMEDY LOOMIS FARGO

Jim Carrey is in talks to star in the independent crime comedy Loomis Fargo, based on the true story of an armored car heist gone wrong. Loomis Fargo will be directed by Jared Hess, who got his career started with the Sundance hit Napoleon Dynamite, before directing Nacho Libre ("Rotten" score of 40% on the RT Tomatometer) and Gentlemen Broncos (19%). Loomis Fargo is also a script that has been passed around Hollywood a few times, with at least five different screenwriters currently credited. If Jim Carrey does indeed sign on, filming is expected to start in North Carolina in April, 2013.

#4 NICOLAS CAGE TO GO WHERE KIRK CAMERON HAS BRAVELY GONE BEFORE AS ONE OF THE LEFT BEHIND

I made this crack just last week, but here we go again... it's a third week in a row now that a new Nicolas Cage movie has been announced that has landed in the Rotten Ideas section. Last week, it was the 10th Century China action movie Outcast, costarring Hayden Christensen. This week, Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in the reboot of the Left Behind film series, based on the post-Rapture books by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. The first set of movies was a trilogy with entries released in 2000, 2002, and 2005, and all three featured Growing Pains actor Kirk Cameron in the lead role (with Louis Gossett, Jr. in the last one, Left Behind: World at War). Even the producers of those movies admit that they were cheaply made, which is part of why they're moving ahead (already) with a reboot. The budget for the Left Behind reboot is expected to be in the $15 million range, which is still not relatively expensive by Hollywood standards, but it's more than the first three were made with (about $4 million for the first film). Anyway, the Left Behind series is about what happens to the world after the Rapture lifts millions of people up into Heaven. It's quite a change of mood for Nicolas Cage from the Ghost Rider movies, let's just say.

#3 THE PEANUTS AFTERMATH GIVES US HEATHCLIFF AND THE FAMILY CIRCUS NEWS... REALLY

Last week's Top Story in the Weekly Ketchup was the news of a new Peanuts movie for 2015 from Blue Sky Studios, the Fox-based company behind the Ice Age franchise. This week, and maybe this is a coincidence (but probably not), there were two new stories about movies that are also based upon long-running newspaper comic strips. First up, there's Heathcliff, that other orange tabby cat from the comic strips that isn't Garfield (which Heathcliff actually predates by 5 years). Now, Heathcliff is getting his own chance at starring in a CGI/live action hybrid, thanks to Waterman Entertainment, the same folks that gave the world the Alvin and the Chipmunks films. Connecting the dots a bit here, both the Garfield movies and the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies were distributed by 20th Century Fox. Whatever they may have in common visually, Heathcliff and Garfield are themselves quite different, personality wise (although one could make the argument that the Bill Murray-voiced Garfield was more like Heathcliff than the comics that inspired him). In other comic strip movie news, there's also The Family Circus to talk about. The film adaptation of the long running comic strip started by artist Bil Keane (the lack of an L there makes him a popular crossword answer, by the way) was first covered in this column back in 2010. Two years later, we have word that 20th Century Fox (see a pattern here?) and Walden Media have hired the screenwriting team of Nichole Millard and Kathryn Price (cowriters of The Game Plan, starring Dwayne Johnson) to try their hand at adapting the comic strip. What might make The Family Circus particularly difficult to adapt into a feature length film is the fact that every "strip" was actually just a single panel with a caption. It's sort of like trying to adapt The Far Side.

#2 ELIZABETH BANKS TO EMBARK ON HER OWN PERSONAL WALK OF SHAME

History may look back on the career of Steven Brill much more favorably, but for now, he's a director with five major motion pictures under his belt, and not a one of them scored higher on the RT Tomatometer than 25%. Specifically, we're talking here about Heavyweights, Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, Without a Paddle, and Drillbit Taylor. Of course, none of those movies featured Elizabeth Banks. That distinction is about to change for Mr. Brill's career, as Elizabeth Banks has been cast as the lead in Walk of Shame. The comedy will be about a woman who has to get across town after a night of debauchery in time for her first day at her dream job as a TV anchorperson. Brill will be directing from his own script, and filming is scheduled to start in January, 2013.

#1 TYLER PERRY'S ALEX CROSS TO GET DOUBLE CROSS... ED

The box office results obviously aren't in yet (as of this writing) for Tyler Perry's Alex Cross, based on the popular crime psychologist character (previously played by Morgan Freeman) created by author James Patterson. But, that didn't stop Perry from starting negotiations for the rights to another book in the series, Double Cross. That was the 13th novel in the series, and you can read the premise over at Wikipedia. Whatever the fate for Alex Cross and its sequel, there was another Tyler Perry-relevant story this week. Perry has begun negotiations with Lionsgate (his longtime home studio) for Single Moms Club, which will be his next film as actor, producer, writer, and director (he only did one of those four jobs on Alex Cross). Single Moms Club will tell the story of how women from differing backgrounds all come together following some sort of incident at their children's school. It's not yet known if Perry will be himself playing one of the four women. As for why this is one of the week's Rotten Ideas, here's Tyler Perry's RT page, which makes Steve Brill's look... let's say "Oscar worthy", or better yet, "Fresh."

Measuring Social Media Marketing ROI - Online Business

Social media has tremendous potential for your small business marketing strategy. It also has plenty of potential as a time and money sink. Getting the most from your social media marketing efforts means producing measurable results.

Yet, social media marketing results can be nebulous, at best. Having 1,000 Twitter followers doesn?t automatically equate to having 1,000 customers. You need to be able to look at the right numbers to know whether you?re actually getting anything for your efforts.

Here are some metrics you can use to measure your social media marketing ROI:

Sales

Ultimately, the goal of your social media marketing campaign is to increase your sales. If you?re not increasing sales, at least indirectly, you might as well shut it down. It might be that you?re promoting branding, for example, which can be hard in and of itself to measure; but even branding activities contribute to sales in a measurable way.

There are a number of tools you can put to use in this task. Google Analytics, for example, can tell you how many of your website referrals are coming in from your social media presence. If you have an online storefront, you can even measure how much of that social media traffic is converting.

That said, your sales goals might be less direct. You might be using social media to drive customers into your physical storefront. In that instance, you?re going to have to find other ways (such as customer surveys or social media-exclusive coupons) to figure out whether your social media efforts are having a direct impact on sales.

Generation of leads

Social media marketing can generate leads in a number of ways. You might use a custom Facebook app on your business? page, for example. You might combine this type of activity with Facebook Insights and Google Analytics to determine how effective these leads are.

You might also use social media to promote a lead generation tool on your own website. For example, tweeting the signup form for your business? monthly newsletter can pay off in the generation of leads.

Extending your reach

By their very nature, small businesses tend to have somewhat limited reach. You usually can?t afford to advertise on national media outlets, and you?re not going to be doing a Superbowl commercial anytime soon. However, social media actually presents an opportunity to extend your reach outside some of those natural limits. And, it does so at an incremental price.

Depending on the nature of your business and your target market, social media might mean reaching customers that can?t be reached in more traditional ways. For example, a younger target market is less likely to read newspapers or watch local network television, and so Internet marketing in general (and social media marketing in particular) are better ways to reach those customers.

Yet, reach is also hard to measure. It?s hard to say for any given customer whether they might have found you via traditional advertising and marketing channels. Customer feedback is key in measuring this element of social media ROI.

Cheap market research and product development

If your business uses tools such as focus groups or product testing procedures, social media presents a potential cost savings to you. You can connect directly with people in your target market, and you can do it in a cheaper and faster way than you could through a traditional product development and testing channel. This, then, increases the overall ROI of your social media presence by decreasing your expenses.

Direct, public customer service and customer retention

Consumers are turning to social media in droves to complain about products or services that they don?t like. Discontent spreads by word of mouth, and social media gives consumers a megaphone. Unlike with traditional word of mouth, social media actually gives you the opportunity to step in and fix a potential problem.

For example, you can use Twitter searches to find out when your product is being mentioned. If someone?s having trouble with a product, you can offer to help or replace the product via Twitter. In doing so, you?re not only retaining that customer, you?re publicly demonstrating your commitment to customer service, which can help bring in new customers.

Social media channels provide you with exciting marketing opportunities. Learn to recognize those opportunities that have a true return on your investment, and focus your efforts into those. Learn to read and quantify your results ? real results ? instead of merely counting social media followers.

Maine innovation on display at Colisee in Lewiston ? Business ...

LEWISTON, Maine ? It was like the brainiest party you?d ever seen: Roughly 400 people crowded into the Androscoggin Bank Colisee to sip wine, eat cheese and exchange ideas.

Really big ideas.

For the first time, The Maine Technology Institute held its Innovation Economy showcase in Lewiston and the turnout was huge. Hundreds came to see and hear the latest in matters such as renewable energy, communications, biotechnology and manufacturing.

?It?s just amazing,? said MTI President Robert Martin, ?the reach and breadth of what Maine companies can do.?

There was a lot of life-changing technology on display, but one of the busiest booths around was more in the realm of leisure. This belonged to Pantheon Guitars, a Lewiston company that had segments of its high-end acoustic guitars on display.

The booth was busy almost at once. Even the nerdiest people admittedly don?t know how a guitar is made.

?That,? said Pantheon CEO John D. Karp, ?is part of the fun.?

Like all other businesses on display at the show, Pantheon has benefited from MTI, which since 2000 has awarded $142 million in grants and loans to Maine companies and research institutions.

?I?m a huge fan,? Karp said. ?They really helped us to make advances in our processes.?

A few booths down stood the people of Falcon Performance Footwear, an Auburn company. It also has received grants from MTI to help with development. In response to that, it put on display a boot, sliced down the middle to show its many parts.

The booth was manned by Carl Spang. As Falcon president, he doesn?t get out to mingle very often with other innovators.

?It?s great to be out at a local show and to see all these people,? Spang said.

Around the corner was Packgen, an Auburn company that manufactures containers made from composite materials. It, too, benefited from an MTI grant and as a result, it expects to create a dozen additional jobs in the coming year.

The show was about innovation, but it wasn?t as tech-heavy as it could have been. Men in coats and ties mingled with women in power suits. They drank beer and wine and gathered in small groups, talking shop or discussing the state of innovation in Maine.

Which was precisely the point.

?We have these great companies in the state, but you don?t see them; they?re tucked away here and there,? MTI spokeswoman Deborah Cook said. ?This is a chance for us to make all of this visible.?

Gov. Paul LePage, citing illness, failed to show to deliver a speech, but that didn?t quiet the enthusiasm of the gathering. Other speakers took his place, including David Kappos, undersecretary of commerce for intellectual property and director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and Desh Deshpande, a Boston venture capitalist and entrepreneur.

Cops: Huge 'bomb' in Federal Reserve plot was fake

The FBI has arrested a 21-year-old man from Bangladesh who was riding in a van carrying a powerful bomb meant for the Federal Reserve in Manhattan. Federal agents say the suspect came to the U.S. in January on a student visa. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

Updated at 8 p.m. ET: NEW YORK -?A suspected terrorist parked a van packed with what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb next to the Federal Reserve building in Lower Manhattan and tried to detonate it Wednesday morning before he was arrested in a terror sting operation, authorities said.

The suspect, 21-year-old Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, is a Bangladeshi national who came to the U.S. on a student visa in January for the specific purpose of launching a terror attack here, authorities said. He allegedly told an undercover agent last month that he hoped the attack would disrupt the presidential election, saying "You know what, this election might even stop," according to the criminal complaint against him.

"He clearly had the intent of creating mayhem here," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Wednesday, saying his actions went "way past aspirational."?

The complaint said Nafis wrote a statement claiming responsibility for what he thought would be the Fed attack, saying he wanted to "destroy America" by going after its economy. He referred to "our beloved Sheikh Osama bin Laden" in the statement, which was stored on a thumb drive.

More about the alleged plot on NBCNewYork.com

He also proposed various other targets beyond the Fed building at 33 Liberty St., just blocks from the World Trade Center site, prosecutors said. He considered targeting a "high-ranking U.S. official"?as well as the New York Stock Exchange.

Kelly said he knew who the official was but refused to name the person, saying only that any details not in the complaint would be revealed in future court proceedings.

Nafis, who lives in Jamaica, Queens, attended Southeast Missouri State University for a semester, studying cybersecurity as a sophomore from January through May 2012, a school spokesman said. He sought a?transfer to a New York City ESL program and left Missouri after the spring, according to a law enforcement official.?

Federal criminal complaint filed against?Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafi (PDF)

He allegedly sought out al-Qaida contacts to help him, unknowingly recruiting an FBI?source in the process. At that point, the FBI and NYPD began monitoring him as he developed the plot, prosecutors said.

This Twitter profile picture, obtained by AFP, allegedly shows Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis of Bangladesh.

An undercover FBI agent posed as an al-Qaida facilitator, supplying him with 20 50-pound bags of what he thought were explosives to use in building his bomb. Nafis also visited the Lower?Manhattan site multiple times as he planned the attack, officials said.

The complaint said he told an agent in July that he wanted "something very big ... that will shake the whole country."

Prosecutors say Nafis met the agent Wednesday morning and put the bomb inside a van before driving to the Fed building, assembling the detonator while he drove.

The pair parked the van by the Fed, got out and walked to a hotel, where Nafis covered his face, put on sunglasses and recorded a video statement he meant to be released after the attack. He then tried to detonate the bomb through a cell phone detonator, officials said.

More on NBCNewYork.com:?Man pleads guilty in plot to kill Saudi ambassador

Law enforcement officials stress that the plot was a sting operation monitored by the FBI, Homeland Security and NYPD and the public was never at risk. The materials he believed were explosives had been rendered inoperable, officials said.?

Nafis was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al-Qaida. His attorney declined comment after a court appearance.

"Attempting to destroy a landmark building and kill or maim untold numbers of innocent bystanders is about as serious as the imagination can conjure, " said Mary Galligan, FBI?acting assistant director in charge.

?The defendant came to this country intent on conducting a terrorist attack on U.S. soil and worked with single-minded determination to carry out his plan," said U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch. "The defendant thought he was striking a blow to the American economy. He thought he was directing confederates and fellow believers. At every turn, he was wrong, and his extensive efforts to strike at the heart of the nation?s financial system were foiled by effective law enforcement.??

Pro Starcraft gamer suspended for sexual abuse comments ...

Professional "Starcraft II" player?Ilyes ?Stephano? Satouri, 19,?was suspended without pay for October and fined for making offensive sexual comments in a livestream.

?

U.S.-based professional gaming organization Evil Geniuses said the French player will not be eligible to join online and offline competitions for the rest of the month.

?

"The full extent of the ramifications for Stephano?s comments is yet to be determined. The decision to suspend him, without pay, for the rest of October is final, but the situation is still being reviewed internally at EG, and we do not consider the matter closed as of yet," the group said in an online post.

?

Satouri?s suspension means he will not be able to take part in the upcoming GD Invitational and DreamHack Bucharest tournaments for which he was previously signed up for.

?

"We sincerely apologize to the respective organizers of these tournaments for any inconvenience the last-minute cancellations may cause. That apology, however, obviously comes as secondary to a much more significant and direly-needed apology for Stephano?s inexcusable comments themselves," said EG.

?

Satouri?s suspension is due to a private message he sent over Battle.net to fellow Starcraft II player and friend, Team Dignitas' Samayan "BlinG" Kay, about abusing a 14-year-old child.

?

The comments were broadcast live online.

?

"Stephano apologized on Twitter later that day saying it was just a 'private joke, nothing serious.' Some fans did not feel his apology was satisfactory, and began to email Evil Geniuses sponsors about his actions, including Intel, Monster Energy, and Steel Series," GameSpot said.

?

EG itself apologized for his comments, which it said "do not reflect our company?s sense of morality, behavior and propriety, and they will not be tolerated."

?

Satouri himself apologized for his comments last week.

?

"They were insensitive, inappropriate, way over the line, and are deserving of the serious ramifications I have received from my team. I accept responsibility for my mistake, and I will be more careful in the future,? he said. ? DVM, GMA News

HBT: Tigers set ALCS rotation ? Fister first up

Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced his ALCS rotation with Doug Fister and Anibal Sanchez getting the ball in the first two games in New York this weekend.

Justin Verlander is scheduled to pitch Game 3 and a potential Game 7. Max Scherzer will be held back until Game 4, meaning he?ll get just one start against the Yankees.

A healthy Scherzer would have almost certainly been the Tigers? No. 2 starter in the postseason after he went 8-2 with a 2.69 ERA and a 110/27 K/BB ratio in 90 1/3 innings after the All-Star break, but he missed a start in the next-to-last week of the regular season with a sore shoulder and also hurt his ankle. As a result, he was held back until Game 4 of the ALDS. He allowed just an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings and struck out eight in the contest, which the Tigers lost in the bottom of the ninth.

The Tigers aren?t in bad shape with Sanchez going in Game 2 instead. He had a 2.43 ERA in six starts in September, and while he lost his ALDS start, he gave up only two runs in 6 1/3 innings versus the A?s. It is worth noting that he was lit up by the Yankees in his one start against them this season, surrendering seven runs in three innings.

Plus, the Tigers are in much better position for the series thanks to their day off Friday, allowing them to use all four of their starters on regular rest.
