An Israeli researcher says that the brain cancer is a hereditary disease?

She?s wrong, of course. Obviously, brain cancer is genetic, your own genetics. Brain cancer is not hereditary. There are a very few syndromes associated with brain tumors, that are familial, but that would be obvious from birth. I am the only one is my family as far back as anyone can investigate, to have brain cancer. Breast, colon and prostate cancers are not generally hereditary, but can be.

If you know that for certain, then it?s just a coincidence. I?ve a feeling you aren?t completely accurate though?

As I already stated: Overall, there are no known causative factors or known hereditary risks associated with the development of glioblastoma multiforme. There are hereditary diseases, Von Hippel Lindau and neurofibromatosis, that have an associated risk with the development of brain tumors but these are very rare.

hereditary cancer syndromes that are associated with brain cancer include:

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 (MEN1)
Cowden syndrome
von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease
Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS)
Inherited Retinoblastoma
Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) ? Turcot syndrome
In all of above hereditary cancer syndromes, the brain cancer risk is relatively low when compared to the increased risk for other types of cancer.

5% to 10% of cancer is hereditary. Most cases of cancer, including brain tumors, are random. There are a few genetic cancer syndromes (i.e. Lynch syndrome) in which a susceptibility to a certain cancer or cancers may be inherited which increases the chances of getting that cancer. This is not common.

For one thing, your friend and his dad could have had two different types of brain tumors. They are not all the same.

There is a theory that SOME brain tumours can have a genetic/hereditary component. Meaning that if someone in your family had it, you may have a higher chance of getting it yourself ? though this does not mean that you will get it.

One form of brain cancer that is known to have a genetic link is GBM (glioblastoma multiforme) this is a particularly nasty form of brain cancer with no chance of cure, and affects mostly people over age of 55.

For some reason, people with a German or Dutch ancestry have a higher chance of getting GBM. My sisters father in law died of GBM ? he did had German ancestry ? but he was also a painter, so exposed to paint fumes all his life. He also had sleep apnoea and other health issues ? so although the genetics were there, whether it was the cause, or acted together with lifestyle exposures is uncertain.

Yes ? genetics plays a part ? but it is not the ONLY determining factor. Just because my sisters father in law had a GBM does not mean his son WILL have it ? but he does have a higher chance than my sister or I who have no family history.

The same thing for breast cancer ? if every woman in your family has had it, chances are it is genetic and you have a very high chance of getting it. They have now found a gene called HER2 which if present increases your likelihood of getting breast cancer (compared to if you don?t have it).

Though just because you DONT have HER2 does not mean you will not get breast cancer. There are other causes.

she says that brain tumor is hereditary disease
the ?nerve center Suraksi and Oncology? at Tel Aviv University, Dr. Deborah Blumenthal, called families with patients suffering from brain cancer to inform the doctors interested in undergoing a medical routine. Previous studies revealed that cancers of the breast, colon and prostate transmitted from one patient to another hereditary
The study was based on a database obtained by the research team from the University of Utah in Salt City, Lake States, about a large number of cases of brain cancer in the United States, also followed the medical records of three generations of patients at least, and for ten generations when families lived in

Hi,I did the following:

The Brain Tumor Foundation for Children, Inc.

Established in 1983 as a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization, the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children was the first group of its kind in the US to focus specifically on pediatric brain tumor disease. The Foundation?s mission is: To provide financial assistance, social support, and information for families of children with brain and spinal cord tumors; fund research projects that improve treatment options and search for a cure; and raise public awareness of the disease and advocate on behalf of children who are affected.
