"A Better Life" a compassionate father-son gem (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) ? "The Bicycle Thief," directed by Vittorio De Sica and written by Cesare Zavattini in 1948, long considered one of the classic films of Italian neo-realism, tells the story of a poor man and his son. Their search for a stolen bicycle the father desperately needs for work becomes a journey that explores poverty and desperation.

"A Better Life" from the always surprising director Chris Weitz employs the same strategy to open up the lives of a Mexican gardener in East Los Angeles and his Americanized son.

Their search for a truck becomes an odyssey of powerlessness and anxiety that creates greater understanding between father and son, who are virtually unaware of each other's lives. Meanwhile the movie tracks the hard reality of what it means to be an illegal immigrant in American society. By keeping things simple and understated, Weitz and screenwriter Eric Eason (working from a Roger L. Simon story) have crafted a little gem where humanity is observed with compassion, not condescension.

You don't make a film like this expecting the kind of grosses Weitz's films such as "New Moon" or "About a Boy" generated. But with targeted marketing and promotions, Summit Entertainment could have a modest box-office hit in "A Better Life," which opens June 24 via Summit Entertainment. Who knows?

It may even pick up a nomination or award at year's end.

Veteran Mexican actor Demian Bichir plays Carlos, an illegal immigrant whose wife long ago abandoned him to raise their young son by himself. While the two haven't exactly prospered, they get by in borderline poverty with Luis (Jose Julian) going to school -- sometimes -- and more or less staying out of trouble with gangs -- so far -- while Carlos scrapes together money as a helper to a gardener with steady clients.

Only now his boss wants to return to Mexico and offers to sell him the truck with all its gardening equipment. Carlos' problem, as it has always been, is he has no driver's license. Any stop by a cop will quickly confirm his undocumented status. Plus, he doesn't begin to have the money to buy the truck.

Hopes get cruelly raised, then dashed when his sister loans Carlos enough money to purchase the truck only for it to disappear the first day on the job. His search for the thief, with Luis a reluctant companion, takes them into gang territory and into contact with strangers with possible ulterior motivations. It's an odyssey that examines many aspects of the human condition, law enforcement, street predators, recklessness and the meaning of family.

There is, in fact, an entire movie going on in the background when its characters travel through the megalopolis that is L.A. by foot, bus or the truck itself: police activity, political rallies, gangbangers, guys looking for work and women bringing home meager supplies are picked up by Weitz's observant camera.

What is unusual here for an American movie, whether from the studios or indie filmmakers, is its willingness to let the movie speak for itself. There is a rich life on display here but the makers trust a viewer to discover it for himself.

The relationship between father and son rests at times as much on what they don't say as what they do. The two males are very different from one another and their different upbringings only partly account for this. Carlos' deeds more than his words impact his son but not always in positive ways.

Luis is American enough to see violence as the easy remedy; Carlos long ago learned the pitfalls of "easy." As the search for the thief and then the truck gets them deeper into troubling areas and tension mounts, the two winds up seeing each other's point of view. But such understanding may come too late to save the family.

Fine and seldom seen L.A. locations, peerless cinematography by Spanish cameraman Javier Aguirresarobe, a perceptive production designer from Missy Stewart and an unobtrusive, Latin-flavored score from the tireless Alexandre Desplat let the moods and environment of the movie seep into a viewer's consciousness. Nothing here is overt; everything, the enigmas and contradictions of life, is subtle and simply portrayed.

Character Development Secrets ? 7 Steps for the development of ...

Part Four: going to work

If you have read the first three articles in this series, we know that the investment in development time pays a dividend fictional character in the difficult process of writing, you get the quality of your history, and chances accepted. Come on!

So far we have worked with the seven-step process for creating compelling characters, intriguing and credible:

1. Label the Desire Essences of each of your main characters.

2.Fear Essences Label each of your main characters.

3. Get special with his own background.

4. They describe their current behavior.

5. Raise the stakes.

6. Not interfere.

7. Can you play your characters.

Now that the framework for the effective development of the history, character, we try to put this knowledge to work!

Problem

Let's start with a pair of poorly developed characters ? a man and a woman in the romantic drama genre. We will put these two in aBookseller for their first meeting and write, without their development:

Rachel in the library, looking around. He needed a book for a dear friend and when they save the book passed a million times, had never been inside. She sailed a bit "out there, and then pulled some books off the shelf trying to find a suitable gift." Is there anything can I help you? "Said a voice behind her. He approached an attractive young man see in his early twenties. "Lookingfor something special? "He asked." No, "was his answer." You are very nice, "said the man." Thank you, "he said, blushing.

Solution

Now, after these two characters through the process of development in the history of labeling their essences, more specifically, increasing the stakes, this is where we stop meddling and let them really play:

Rachel in the bookstore, what a quick visual scan of the interior. She sailed for a while, try to avoid scanning the shelves and(To hide his desire) other patrons. Coming around a corner caught their reflection in a mirror and looked for a moment. He was like his baggy jeans and sweatshirt look hid her face, so when she dressed the part of the classical literature as a magical door (her desire to live in a different reality). Rachel gently pulled a copy of "Leaves of Grass" from the shelf (her desire to be appreciated for his intellect) and held it gently in his hands.

"A woman who enjoysWhitman is hard to find "a deep voice said from behind her (her desire for connection.) Surprised, Rachel stumbled back into the shelf (his fear of the opposite sex) before trying a hand on his arm constantly felt her . He looked up and saw a large man with a thick crop curly brown hair and rich, dark eyes, she looked with a mixture of concern and amusement.

"I'm sorry if I scared," said the stranger, that heat is only slightly loose his inconvenience. "My mother and I to readWhitman together, "he continued. Rachel was there, in silence and embarrassment." I think that's where I got my love of reading. How about you? "He asked. His eyes were penetrating power (his post is high).

"There is little else I think," murmured (his desire for connection). His eyes never left the ground (to hide his desire is strong).

He nodded. "I'm always so lost in a story that disappears the rest of the world."

Rachel's eyes slowlythe floor, his capture only briefly before through the book in his hand. The nervousness in my stomach danced torn so wild that he was not surprised his body. Even if you are normally mixed away and avoided any exchange, he found his feet in a way that was cemented in, unable from his presence.

"They want to take a walk in the pub (the need for a drink)?" He asked.

He raised his head (his strong desire for connectedness vs.The fear of the opposite sex and the desire to avoid alcohol). "I gotta go now (to win his fear)." He jumped from the supermarket, the book still in hand. He looked back and saw the young man when he runs a little pull money from his wallet, his hand on his chest and then start after her (his need to connect to overcome the fear of rejection) was launched.

In this example, you have feelings, behaviors and history of driving every subtle action and reaction. Every human being is a complex network that must continuebefore the eyes of the reader, so that each side is forced to keep reading to unravel. After all the character development is the key to unlock this kind of writing! Experiment with this process of developing new character yourself and see if you can your characters to life on the page!

Meanwhile, the authors of the attack back in his chair, his finger on the button, and your letter to the stars.

Democrats Tired of Weiner Distraction (U.S. News & World Report)

Nancy Pelosi didn't lose her cool, but her frustration level was clearly rising. The House minority leader was addressing the media during her weekly press conference, but her appearance came only minutes after news broke that Rep. Anthony Weiner, the embattled New York Democrat, would be stepping down. Pelosi had hoped to push a Democratic bill on Chinese currency manipulation, but the larger-than-usual crowd of reporters and cameras had other plans.

Pelosi told the crowd she wouldn't talk about Weiner until he had made his announcement on Thursday afternoon, but the questions came anyway. "Perhaps I was unclear," she responded, reiterating the refusal. Reporters tried different tacks--would she comment on congressional ethics, generally? "No." Ultimately, the press conference was dominated by questions about Weiner and the congressional showdown over the conflict in Libya, with only one jobs-related question and none at all about currency manipulation. At one point, Pelosi admonished the press corps to keep the economy in mind. "We will not be deterred from our quest for jobs, and I wish that the ardor for information on our job issue was as strong as it was for this subject," Pelosi said. [Vote now: Is Weiner's political career over for good?]

And that, in a nutshell, was why Weiner became too much of a liability for the Democrats to be able to survive the scandal. When he admitted a week and a half ago that he had meant to send a female supporter a lewd picture of himself, it didn't seem out of the question that he might be able to hang on. It wasn't clear that he had done anything illegal or against the congressional rules of ethics, and other representatives, such as fellow New Yorker Charlie Rangel, had survived much worse. But with today's rowdy, uncontrollable Internet media environment, the Democratic Party simply couldn't afford to have the ethically compromised congressman continue to blunt whatever political momentum they had gained from the New York 26th special election, and the voter dissatisfaction with the GOP's Medicare plan. Weiner, once an effective advocate for the Democratic message on cable news and the Internet, was now the biggest thing holding it back.

With voters increasingly anxious about the economy, the Washington discussion has abruptly shifted from the national debt to jobs. Early Tuesday morning, House Speaker John Boehner and the Republican leadership used their weekly press conference to blast President Obama's economic performance at the one-year anniversary of his "Summer of Recovery," but barely made a mention of the deficit, the GOP's one-time talking point. For Boehner, the Weiner issue proved to be an annoyance as well. Without commenting directly on the issue, Boehner said, "It's just been a distraction. [Voters] want us to focus on job creation." [Read: Little Evidence Weiner Broke Law in Twitter Photo Scandal.]

Pelosi, along with virtually all of the Democratic House leadership members and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, had called for Weiner to step down. Obama stopped short of calling for his resignation, but claimed that, if he were in Weiner's shoes, he would step down. Weiner himself, in announcing his resignation, claimed the scandal had become too much of a distraction from the issues he cares about.

Executive Job Search Strategy: Your Maturity Counts! | OnyxBook

Executive Job Search Strategy: Your Maturity Counts!

Article by Paul Megan

As part of your executive job search your work history and educational credentials can be verified. However, it?s your unwritten level of maturity that can make all the difference to an employer? and to the ultimate success of your executive job search.

Savvy employers are sizing you up from the moment they lay eyes on you. They instinctively know that what they DON?T know about you will be more persuasive in the final analysis.

So they will be carefully checking you out. They may not ask direct questions about your maturity, but you can be sure they will be observing how you handle yourself to see if you qualify.

Here are 5 questions our experience tells us you should be prepared to demonstrate as part of your executive job search strategy:

1. What kind of judgment have you shown in your business affairs?

2. How have you revealed your concern for the well-being of other people?

3. Are you living within your means and handling personal financial decisions with maturity?

4. Have you pursued your career in an adult manner and with consideration for your employers?

5. Are you goal-oriented with a history of completing anything you?ve undertaken?

Typically, executives make the mistake of focusing on their work history. Traditionally they feel that they will be judged on the basis of what they used to do for someone else. Nothing could be further from the truth.

A savvy hiring decision-maker is interested in finding the answer to TWO questions only? what can you do for my bottom line?.. and what can you do to make my job easier?

If you fail to answer those two questions effectively, you?re out!

Behind those two critical questions are the unspoken concerns about your maturity. No one will drill you on these issues. So it?s up to you to weave them into your presentation so that they are resolved in the mind of the person who could be your next boss.

India stumble to 251 vs Windies in 5th ODI

Kingston, June 16: Fortunes swung and the momentum changed sides as India ended up posting a challenging total of 251 all out in 47.3 overs in the 5th ODI. Overcoming an unimpressive start, Virat Kohli (94 off 103 balls) and Rohit Sharma (57 off 71 balls) bailed India out with a magnificent 100-plus run stand for the fourth wicket. The visitors however, lost a flurry of wickets at the death and folded for 251 in 47.3 overs with Andre Russell emerging as a hero for the Winides with figures of 4/35.

Being put into bat first, India got off to a poor start. In just the fourth over, Andre Russell had Indian opener Parthiv Patel caught at square leg by a running, tumbling Anthony Martin. Parthiv had paid the price for attempting a shoddy pull and was on his way back for 6 off 11 balls as the score read 16/1. Then two overs later, Kemar Roach struck to remove the other opener Shikar Dhawan for 12 of 26 balls, having him caught at first slip with the score now at 21/2. The two new batsmen - Virat Kohli and Manoj Tiwary - tried to put the house in order, as the score crawled along to 39/2 in 10 overs.

Runs were hard to come by as eventhough Kohli hit a few boundaries, the hosts' attack was keeping up the pressure. But that changed in the 15th over, when Kohli smashed a four and a six off Windies captain Darren Sammy. However, in the next over, there was trouble at the other end when Kieron Pollard had Tiwary caught behind for 22 off 22 balls and India had slipped to 79/3 in 16 overs. That's when the in-form Rohit Sharma walked to the crease and together with Kohli, took India past 100/3 in the 21st over with Kohli striking Martin for a boundary to bring up the 3-digit firgure.

The two lifted the run-rate to 5, reaching 125/3 in 25 overs and wresting back some of the momentum. As the batting duo continued to take the innings forward, Kolhi ran a single off Martin to bring up India's 150/3 in the 31st over. With the initiative clearly in India's hands, Sharma clobbered Roach for six to notch up a century partnership with Kohli in the 36th over. India had sped to 183/3 in 35.1 overs. But soon afterward, the Windies struck. First Ramnaresh Sarwan ran out Kohli for 94 and then Pollard dismissed new batsman Suresh Raina for a duck as India slid to 190/5 in 37 overs.

Yusuf Pathan joined Sharma in the middle and struck a four off Lendl Simmons to take India over 200 in the 40th over. But three overs later, Martin pegged back the visitors by removing Sharma for 57 offf 71 balls. India were now at 225/6 in 43 overs. However, Pathan wouldn't back down, straight off hitting Russell to the boundary.

Then R Ashwin teamed up with Pathan to knock a six and a four off Roach. However almost immediately, Russell brought Pathan's cameo to an end for 30 off 29 balls and two balls later, dismissed Amit Mishra for a duck as India's score now read 246/8 in 45.4 overs. Roach then sent back Vinay Kumar for 2 and removed last batsman Ishant Sharma for a duck as India were bowled out for 251 in the 48th over.

Contra Dennett I: Stuffing a straw man ? Whosoever Desires

I?ve made little secret on these pages of my disdain for the crop of neo-atheists who have gotten so much acclaim over the past several years. Most of their arguments wouldn?t merit a passing grade for a high school sophomore.? (No offense intended to our exceptionally bright high school readers, especially those from MUHS.)

Nonetheless, Pope Paul VI in 1966 entrusted the Society of Jesus with the mission to make a ?stout, united stand against atheism,? so I?ve devoted some time in my philosophy studies to the work of these neo-atheists.? Of the bunch, Daniel C. Dennett has a reputation for seriousness in part because he is a philosophy professor at Tufts, so I decided to review his book Breaking the Spell for a philosophy of religion class?and to share parts of my critique with you, dear readers of Whosoever Desires.

Dennett frames his book as a plea for the rational study of religion, a rather innocuous suggestion to which believers themselves should pose no objections.? I wish, in fact, that Catholic leaders would study seriously the research done by sociologists such as Christian Smith or Rodney Stark. ?(Stark?s analysis disproves the common assumption that the growth of religious communities comes by loosening religious demands, when quite the opposite is true.)? Dennett claims that the only ?prescription? he intends to make ?categorically and without reservation? is to ?do more research.?

Unfortunately, Dennett?s true agenda is revealed at the end of the book when he advocates a program of worldwide reeducation into a ?historically and biologically informed? view of religion in order to combat ?those who would betray our democracy in pursuit of their religious agendas.?? Such reeducation would be conducted ?gently, firmly,? Dennett reassures us, but would necessarily involve depriving parents of the right to bring up their children in their own religious tradition.? Rather more than research is involved in the spell Dennett attempts to cast.

Dennett?s real aim in Breaking the Spell is not the advance of knowledge but an attack on religion?s social influence.? Though he cites critics of Christianity throughout his book?Voltaire, Hume, Nietzsche, Dawkins, Harris, even Andy Rooney?Dennett simultaneously argues that religion has enjoyed ?a traditional exemption from certain forms of analysis and criticism.?? To which, I would suggest that Dennett pick up a recent copy of the New York Times.? Or Time.? Or Newsweek.? Or that he poll his colleagues in the Tufts philosophy department about their views of religion.

Exemption from criticism?? Dennett needs to do a little more research.

The research method he does employ in the book leaves me scratching my head.? He claims his understanding of religion comes from interviews he conducted ?with quite a few people.?? Given such rigorous methodological standards, it?s small wonder Dennett falls back again and again on stereotypes and caricatures.? So, for example, rather than engage with any of the Church?s bioethical objections to stem cell research, Dennett describes the Catholic position on the subject as ?you believe that stem-cell research is wrong because that is what God has told you.?? Well, not exactly.

That Dennett does not want to engage with any intellectually rigorous versions of religious belief becomes even clearer when he dismisses all of academic theology in three sentences?enclosed in parentheses.

(A milder and more constructive response to relentless skepticism is the vigorous academic industry of theological discussion and research, very respectfully inquiring into the possible interpretations of the various creeds.? This earnest intellectual exercise scratches the skeptical itch of those few people who are uncomfortable with the creeds they were taught as children, and is ignored by everybody else.? Most people don?t feel the need to examine the details of the religious propositions they profess.)

One wonders where such ?relentless skepticism? comes from, given religion?s immunity from criticism or critique, but the paragraph is most noteworthy because it amounts to a more or less open admission that Dennett is not attacking the strongest version of theism, but rather that taught to children.? Imagine Dennett?s ?argument? if applied to medicine:? All medicine must be quackery because most people who say they believe in medicine would be hard-pressed to explain complex questions about how the endocrine system works.? (Sure there are doctors who investigate those questions, but they?re a tiny minority.)

Dennett is doing what in philosophy is known as creating a straw man, attacking a construct so weak nobody would really defend it.? The widespread religious ignorance Dennett attacks is indeed a real problem, but it?s the sort of thing serious believers should lament?and the reason we have forums like this humble little blog.

Dennett?s strategy of creating a straw man, however, is both the heart of his argument and the fundamental flaw of his project.? Dennett is arguing against a murky notion of God and a murky notion of religion, claiming that these notions are incoherent.? And I agree with him.? So would any serious adherent of Christianity, Judaism, or Islam.? Serious adherents to these faiths would disagree among themselves over how to speak about God, but they would all agree that it is a mistake to attribute to him a mishmash of vague characteristics pilfered from discrete religious traditions.

Put in another way, Dennett?s enemy in Breaking the Spell is ?Religion,? but I do not believe in Religion.? I believe in Roman Catholicism.? I do not feel compelled in any way to defend an Islamic conception of God, nor polytheistic beliefs and practices.? In fact, I would argue that many of those beliefs and practices are false.? Likewise, it should not count against an Islamic conception of God if Dennett finds belief in the Trinity implausible.? To paraphrase the late Richard John Neuhaus, I don?t believe in the God Dennett doesn?t believe in either.

Making his opponent Religion, however, is clever for Dennett strategically.? It allows him to group together a whole range of beliefs and practices, many of them quite objectionable, and then criticize the followers of Religion for their incoherence.

So Dennett?s idealized opponent, Religion, believes in:? the End Times (no doubt including the Rapture); creationism; all varieties of miracles; ?bigotry, murderous fanaticism, oppression, cruelty, and enforced ignorance?; Shiva and Vishnu; goat sacrifice; a triune soul; bamboo icons; the Ten Commandments; ghosts; the Book of Common Prayer; shamanism; merely the concept of God; a heterodox notion of transubstantiation; Deism; extra ecclesia nulla salus; and shameless appeals to sacred texts to disguise ignorance and deflect ?well-meant criticism.?

Some of these beliefs are good, others not so good, but the unspoken question behind Dennett?s treatment of religion is how could anyone believe in all this stuff?

To which the answer is, of course:? nobody does.

***

Next we?ll turn to the mileage Dennett tries to get out of his straw man as he tallies up the pluses and minuses of Religion.

Look Out, It's Ford's New Smart Car System!

Car safety is one of the top areas that car manufacturers are constantly striving to improve upon and innovations are being increasingly developed to ensure the safest drive possible. The Ford Motor Group has just showcased its latest safety advancement in San Francisco to an ecstatic and impressed audience. The advancement in question is the fantastic 'Dedicated Short Range Communications' System or DSRC as it is being abbreviated to.

The system is a crash avoidance system at present that uses wireless technology between cars. Currently this is its main objective along with automatically dealing with toll booth collections wirelessly. Ford are by no means the only motor company working on the idea, many other companies are looking into investing in this advanced and futuristic form of wireless technology such as Hyundai, Mercedes, Volkswagen, General Motors, Toyota and Nissan to name but a few.

One of the technical team leaders within the Ford Motor company has announced that rolling tests will be taking place in a city in the near future. It is thought that thousands of cars will be fitted with the wireless device system to test just how effective and road ready it will be.

Something that is expected when it comes to the commercial release of such as a device is its cost. Due to its simple and effective use of already widely used and available wireless technology it is expected that units will be cheap to install and integrate. Certainly good news should the safety system become in any way regulatory to have equipped in the future.

Not only could the DSRC be important for safety and crash detection scenarios but also something that could detect possible traffic congestion. An end to traffic jams? Who knows! One thing for sure is that the technology is only starting to be used to realize its full potential, as so many advancements could be made in the future using it. An example of how the system will work is by the use of road junctions with sensors installed close by, the sensors would have data streamed wirelessly to cars within the vicinity to inform them of any potential hazards with ease and in time for drivers to adjust for them.

In the future it is thought that these types of systems could become fully integrated with vehicles, so for example instead of giving an audible sound or warning light the vehicle could easily slow down safely automatically should a problem or hazard be detected.

Asian markets down amid rate hike expectations (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets mostly fell Wednesday as investors anticipated rate hikes by central banks in India and China to contain stubbornly high inflation.

Oil prices hovered above $99 a barrel after a report showed U.S. crude inventories fell more than expected, suggesting demand may be improving. The dollar was lower against the yen but up against the euro.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average rose 0.1 percent to 9,561.30. Honda Motor Corp. gained 1.3 percent a day after the company announced that vehicle production in Japan is expected to be back at nearly normal levels by later this month and, outside of Japan, by August or September.

Japanese manufacturing was disrupted by a huge earthquake and tsunami on March 11 but analysts say the recovery at Honda and other Japanese automakers has been remarkable

Other markets fell amid expectations that China's central bank will go ahead with at least one more interest rate hike this month or next.

China's May's inflation rate of 5.5 percent was the highest since July 2008. Beijing has made taming price increases a priority but its measures could also slow growth in the world's second-largest economy.

Inflation is also buffeting India's economy, the third largest in Asia. The Reserve Bank of India, which has raised key policy rates nine times since March 2010 in an effort to tame inflation, is expected to raise rates again at a monetary policy review Thursday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.2 percent to 22,445.70 and South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.4 percent to 2,069.10. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.3 percent to 4,569.80.

In New York, a government report Tuesday on retail sales in May was better than expected, driving stocks higher. The government said retail sales edged down 0.2 percent last month, but economists had expected worse.

Excluding weak car sales, retail sales rose 0.3 percent. Americans bought fewer cars during the month, but that was more a reflection of production disruptions caused by the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1 percent to close at 12,076.11. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.3 percent to 1,287.87. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.5 percent to 2,678.72.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 11 cents to $99.26 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained $2.07 to settle at $99.37 on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro dropped to $1.4419 from $1.4468 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar slipped to 80.42 yen from 80.52 yen.

How to Beat a Traffic Ticket in Chicago | Colorado DUI Legal News ...

How to Beat a Traffic Ticket in Chicago

Article by Lynette Simmons Hoag

In Chicago, you insurance claim may be negotiated and/or settled on the result of the outcome of a traffic ticket . Insurance companies determine fault and percentages of fault based on what happens in traffic court. Of course, the first issue is whether a traffic ticket is issued at the scene of an accident. Then, which drivers received tickets. Perhaps both drivers were ticketed. The next important issue is what was the ticket for? Finally, what is the result of the ticket in court: guilty or not guilty. After these questions have been answered, liability or fault will be determined. The adjuster may assess fault 100% against you or the other driver.

In Chicago when you receive a traffic ticket you may ask yourself whether it is worth it to fight the traffic ticket. If you got a ticket that indicates ?fault? e.g., improper lane usage, illegal left-hand turn, speeding, you definitely want to appear in court. If the officer that issued the ticket is not in court, you will not be prosecuted and the ticket will be dismissed. You have just beat a traffic ticket in Chicago without any costs to yourself, other than your time. However, if you hire an attorney to beat a traffic ticket, your attorney will step up first. This means your attorney may appear before the judge on your traffic ticket before the officer that issued the tickets arrives. In Chicago, the tickets are called alphabetically. Your attorney steps up before the just starts calling traffic tickets issued to offenders? whose names start with ?A?.

In some cases, the officer that issued the speeding or other ticket may have evidence of your guilt, such as your speed as recorded on a radar gun or video taped evidence of your offense. If the officer is in court, you are not likely to beat this traffic ticket. Cut your losses and plead guilty. If you choose to fight a ticket, be sure to question the officer about how far he was from your car, whether his line of sight was blocked and if he remembers any details of the conversation he had with you. You may remember that you were in a hurry to get home to a sick child while the officer may not. The court may be lenient based on your testimony of extenuating circumstances.

If you are not the at-fault driver, be sure to go to court to ensure that the at-fault driver pleads or is found guilty. When the at-fault driver steps up to the bench, you should also approach to contest his/her ?not guilty? plea. You should go to trial and testify against the at-fault driver to ensure that s/he is found guilty. If you do not and the traffic ticket is dismissed, rest assured that the at-fault driver?s insurance company will use this to claim that the accident was not his/her fault or to reduce his/her percentage of fault and pay you less for your property damage and/or personal injuries.

In Chicago, contesting a traffic ticket can do more than keep points off of your license or keep your license from being suspended. The result of a traffic ticket is often used by an insurance company to assess fault or liability. Do all you can to make sure the fault is put in the right shoulders.

Clean Power Finance Is Now a PPA Firm Too : Greentech Media

Another entrant in the residential PPA market?with backing from KP and Google.

Clean Power Finance Is Now a PPA Firm Too

richardmasoner creative commons flickr

Kleiner Perkins and Google Ventures made a significant investment in solar SaaS firm Clean Power Finance (CPF) late last year. Until that time, CPF's business was providing a standardized software tool that lets solar panel installers speed up the sales proposal, rebate, and lead generation processes. Previous investors have included Claremont Creek Ventures, Clean Pacific Ventures, Sand Hill Angels, and clean tech investor Gary Kremen.

The firm was also considering the idea of providing point-of-purchase PPA financing, according to my sources.

Kremen, even before Clean Power Finance's Sept 2006 incorporation, had asked publicly, "Why can't buying solar be like buying a car with POS [point of sale] financing? Solar is in roughly the same price range -- you should get credit at the same time you make the purchase."

And last week, at a Trina Solar installer seminar, CPF publicly declared that they were offering residential PPAs.

Thang Nguyen, Strategic Account Director at CPF, said that one quarter of residential solar deals are done through a PPA, largely from firms requiring exclusive relationships.? The cash to finance these projects usually comes in the form of tax equity.? CPF's ultimate goal is to "help sell more solar systems."?

Unlike SolarCity or SunRun, Nguyen said that CPF "doesn't want to be branded in the entire equation." They'd like to consider themselves a "white label company" where "the integrator owns the customer."

Nguyen stressed that the customer in a PPA is not buying a solar system: "What you're really buying is electricity." Over the course of 20 years, a customer could pay $66,000 for electricity from a utility or $42,600 for the same kilowatt-hours from a rooftop leased solar system, according to Nguyen's presentation.

There are a few big names in residential solar leasing -- SolarCity, Sungevity, and SunRun. (SolarCity has their own installers; SunRun and Sungevity work with a network of installers.)? There are also other, smaller residential solar leasing firms such as Solar Universe, Ontility, SunPower, SolarCraft, Sun Edison, CentroSolar, and Suntech?s BriteLease program.

In a lease arrangement, the leasing company covers the cost of installing solar panels, typically on the rooftop of the customer?s home. In this model, the leasing company owns the system, rather than the homeowner. Solar leasing companies receive any state and federal tax credits and other incentives available for alternative-energy installations. The homeowner agrees to pay the leasing company a predetermined monthly payment over the term of the lease, and receives the financial and environmental benefits from all of the power produced by the solar energy system. Solar customers buy additional power as needed from their local utility at the going rate. They may also sell excess energy back to the local utility.

Solar leases typically run between 15 and 20 years. If the customer sells the home within that time, the lease agreement transfers to the new homeowner, pending credit approval.??

CPF joins the list of PPA providers, a list that can afford to be longer in order to make it easier to get solar on the roofs of more homeowners.

Overnight music video :: Israel Matzav

Overnight music video

The period between Shavuoth and the mourning period that begins on the 17th day of Tamuz - about six weeks from now - is a heavy wedding period. I haven't gone to any weddings yet (and I'm planning to skip one tomorrow night), but as of now I have one Wednesday night (which I may also miss), two Sunday night and one next Wednesday night... so far (and a Bar Mitzva last night and one Thursday night).

To get in the mood, here's Yaakov Shwekey's Meheira - music only, no singing until the end.

Let's go to the videotape.

An Israeli researcher says that the brain cancer is a hereditary ...

An Israeli researcher says that the brain cancer is a hereditary disease?

Posted by april
She?s wrong, of course. Obviously, brain cancer is genetic, your own genetics. Brain cancer is not hereditary. There are a very few syndromes associated with brain tumors, that are familial, but that would be obvious from birth. I am the only one is my family as far back as anyone can investigate, to have brain cancer. Breast, colon and prostate cancers are not generally hereditary, but can be.

If you know that for certain, then it?s just a coincidence. I?ve a feeling you aren?t completely accurate though?

As I already stated: Overall, there are no known causative factors or known hereditary risks associated with the development of glioblastoma multiforme. There are hereditary diseases, Von Hippel Lindau and neurofibromatosis, that have an associated risk with the development of brain tumors but these are very rare.

hereditary cancer syndromes that are associated with brain cancer include:

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 (MEN1)
Cowden syndrome
von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease
Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS)
Inherited Retinoblastoma
Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) ? Turcot syndrome
In all of above hereditary cancer syndromes, the brain cancer risk is relatively low when compared to the increased risk for other types of cancer.

Posted by tiredmt
5% to 10% of cancer is hereditary. Most cases of cancer, including brain tumors, are random. There are a few genetic cancer syndromes (i.e. Lynch syndrome) in which a susceptibility to a certain cancer or cancers may be inherited which increases the chances of getting that cancer. This is not common.

For one thing, your friend and his dad could have had two different types of brain tumors. They are not all the same.

There is a theory that SOME brain tumours can have a genetic/hereditary component. Meaning that if someone in your family had it, you may have a higher chance of getting it yourself ? though this does not mean that you will get it.

One form of brain cancer that is known to have a genetic link is GBM (glioblastoma multiforme) this is a particularly nasty form of brain cancer with no chance of cure, and affects mostly people over age of 55.

For some reason, people with a German or Dutch ancestry have a higher chance of getting GBM. My sisters father in law died of GBM ? he did had German ancestry ? but he was also a painter, so exposed to paint fumes all his life. He also had sleep apnoea and other health issues ? so although the genetics were there, whether it was the cause, or acted together with lifestyle exposures is uncertain.

Yes ? genetics plays a part ? but it is not the ONLY determining factor. Just because my sisters father in law had a GBM does not mean his son WILL have it ? but he does have a higher chance than my sister or I who have no family history.

The same thing for breast cancer ? if every woman in your family has had it, chances are it is genetic and you have a very high chance of getting it. They have now found a gene called HER2 which if present increases your likelihood of getting breast cancer (compared to if you don?t have it).

Though just because you DONT have HER2 does not mean you will not get breast cancer. There are other causes.

she says that brain tumor is hereditary disease
the ?nerve center Suraksi and Oncology? at Tel Aviv University, Dr. Deborah Blumenthal, called families with patients suffering from brain cancer to inform the doctors interested in undergoing a medical routine. Previous studies revealed that cancers of the breast, colon and prostate transmitted from one patient to another hereditary
The study was based on a database obtained by the research team from the University of Utah in Salt City, Lake States, about a large number of cases of brain cancer in the United States, also followed the medical records of three generations of patients at least, and for ten generations when families lived in
