Neil Armstrong's Death May Spur Apollo 11 Landing Site Preservation

The passing of famed astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon and commander of Apollo 11, may strengthen the movement to designate the Tranquility Base lunar landing site as a National Historic Landmark.

The field of space heritage preservation is gaining momentum, and a recently authored bill aims protect the Apollo 11?s Eagle lunar lander touchdown site and all the artifacts that astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin left behind on the lunar surface.

A leading champion of the moon landing site preservation campaign is Beth O?Leary, an associate professor of anthropology in New Mexico State University?s College of Arts and Sciences. ?I had one sad thought that with his passing, people may consider the site on the moon more ?historic,?" she told SPACE.com.

O?Leary and Chico State University archaeology professor Lisa Westwood worked with California Congressman Dan Lungren and his staff to write the bill. [Photos: Neil Armstrong Remembered]

Cultural material

There?s a total of 190 tons of cultural material on the moon, O'Leary said, and there are about 106 artifacts that are specific to the Apollo 11 site. The effort under way is to preserve the significant technological objects that got Armstrong and Aldrin to the moon for that historic flight.

California and New Mexico have already listed Tranquility Base on their state historic registers. The next step would be the National Historic Landmark designation.

Once a property is designated a National Historic Landmark, it can be nominated for inclusion on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization?s (UNESCO) World Heritage List. [New Photos of Apollo Moon Landing Sittes]

Westwood and O?Leary also have been working with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the World Heritage List?s advisory body, over the last three years to make the case for the Apollo sites to be added to this list.

?Sites on the list now include Chaco Canyon, the Pyramids at Giza, Stonehenge,? O?Leary said in a press statement, ?so there are many sites on the Earth that are recognized by this group of people. Putting the first lunar landing on the list means we recognize this is an achievement for humanity.?

Tangible memory

?The passing of an American hero, Neil Armstrong, saddened the world," Westwood said. "It also brings to light the importance of preserving Apollo sites on the moon, because the human experience on the lunar surface was realized by only 12 humans ? a staggeringly slim percentage of humankind.? Westwood said that these brave astronauts are only with us for a brief period of time, and a generation from now, they will have passed on, no longer able to speak to their experiences and the historical significance of their achievement.

?By preserving the sites they left behind on the moon, we are, in a sense, preserving not only the historical event of the first lunar landing, but the tangible memory of the Apollo astronauts,? Westwood said.

Legal gray area

?Our ideas on lunar preservation were presented by our ICOMOS ?caseworker? ? for lack of a better word ? in Helsinki a month ago,? O?Leary said. She and Westwood are working on getting the Tranquility Base Act in front of Congress to secure National Historic Landmark status; co-sponsors for Lundgren?s bill are still needed.

Objects at Tranquility Base are in a legal gray area. O?Leary said. By treaty, however, countries own the property they have placed on the moon, but no one can own the lunar surface.

In 2010, Robert Kelso, former director of NASA?s lunar commercial services, invited O?Leary to join a group of NASA scientists and engineers to help create guidelines to protect U.S. objects on the moon from future visitors. The recommendations were developed in response to a request from the Google Lunar X Prize.

Important first step

Although it is not legally binding, the paper, "NASA?s Recommendations to Space Faring Entities: How to Protect and Preserve the Historic and Scientific Value of U.S. Government Lunar Artifacts," took an important first step toward protecting these sites on the moon, O?Leary said.

?Some of those guidelines include where these spacecraft can land and the distance at which they have to be,? said O?Leary. ?They can image the objects, but we would hate for a rover that is mobile to go over the tracks that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made or to crash into some of the artifacts that are standing?some of them are scientific experiments."

Robots to the moon

In May of this year, NASA and the X Prize Foundation of Playa Vista, Calif., announced that the Google Lunar X Prize is recognizing guidelines established by the space agency to protect lunar historic sites and preserve ongoing and future science on the moon.

The Google Lunar X Prize offers $30 million to the first privately funded team to send a robot to the moon. Twenty-six teams will compete for the prize.

Meanwhile, O?Leary said she plans to keep pressing forward on space heritage preservation.

?I?m one of those believers that if it?s not in two years or five years or 20 years, we will go back to the moon, I think first with robotics and second with humans,? O?Leary said. ?If we don?t have a preservation framework in place, if we don?t have rules and ideas about what is important to preserve and how to preserve it, we really run the risk of destroying sites and artifacts."

Preserved for posterity

?In terms of the preservation of artifacts on the moon, I hope Neil?s passing will raise the priority in everyone?s mind the need to preserve this critically significant history,? said Roger Launius, senior curator, Division of Space History and the Smithsonian?s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

?I think there have been great strides made in the last couple years in that regard, but it still is at the realm of informal ?rules of the road,? rather than specific protections carrying the force of law,? Launius told SPACE.com.

?Perhaps that will change in the next few years. Regardless of the form these efforts to preserve the record of the Apollo moon landings may take, the loss of the heroic figure prompts us to reflect on this historic occurrence and to redouble efforts to ensure that it is preserved for posterity,? Launius said.

Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. He is a winner of last year's National Space Club Press Award and a past editor-in-chief of the National Space Society's Ad Astra and Space World magazines. He has written for SPACE.com since 1999.

Buying a Toaster Oven | Content for Reprint

Word Count: 668 Date:

So, what's the advantage of having a toaster oven versus just having a regular toaster? Here are some things to consider.

Consider the functions of your basic toaster: It makes toast.

On the other hand, with a toaster oven, you can:

Make toast.

Toast bagels. Okay so you can do that in some toasters that are made for larger items.

You're not limited to two slices of bread. Once again, you can upgrade your toaster for more slices if you're so inclined.

You can't reheat pizza in a toaster. At least not more than once. Sure you can use the microwave, but the crust is going to get soggy or tough. A toaster oven will make it nice and crisp. A hint here is to heat it just a bit in the microwave, then pop it in the toaster oven to get crisp.

It's great to have access to a small oven without having to heat the full traditional oven. Sometimes, you just don't need that much oven space. So, especially in the summer, a toaster oven can come in handy. A countertop toaster oven allows you to cook small amounts of food without wasting energy (and money) using your regular oven.

You can bake in a toaster oven. Don't even think of trying that in a toaster.

Look for a toaster oven with a convection setting. That provides a small fan inside that circulates the hot air around the food, allowing the food to cook much quicker and more evenly. You'll spend a bit more for a toaster oven with the convection option, but you'll save almost a quarter of your cooking time.

For best results and the most versatility, look for a toaster oven that comes in the 1400 watt range. This will not only heat more quickly, you'll be able to heat it up to 450-500 degrees which is crucial in some recipes.

What else should you consider when purchasing a toaster oven? Consider these tips:

A chrome or stainless steel finish will be the best for easy cleaning. That's important if you plan to do a lot of broiling where the foods will splatter. On the other hand, if you anticipate that your children will be using it, you may want to opt for a model with a plastic exterior. These models are harder to clean, but they stay cool on the outside while cooking.

Look for a model with an electronic temperature control. Not only will these mean you don't have to keep checking to see if the food is done, this aids in preparing foods with a longer cooking time.

Planning to make pizza? Then you need one with the interior at least 9 inches deep. However, most supermarket pizzas are 12 inches in diameter.

If you plan to cook a whole chicken, you'll need to make sure you get an oven with the height clearance needed.

Look for a removable tray, rack and turntable for easier cleanup.

Some toaster ovens come with a self-cleaning feature. While that's nice to have, the unit is fairly small and generally pretty easy to keep clean.

Another safety feature to look for is an auto off feature. This is again especially important if your children will be using the toaster oven.

Some models will have an audible beep to notify you when the food is done. Check this out in the store because you don't want it to be louder than the smoke detector.

Some toaster ovens will come with bake ware such as trays or racks. That's a nice feature to have and you know you'll always have bake ware that perfectly fits your oven.

As kitchen appliances go, a toaster oven isn't essential. But it can be a nice, added convenience.

Lawrence Reaves writes for a kitchen appliance company that offers a selection of toaster ovens that you might find convenient. For more information about these toaster ovens visit this site.

GOP rival slams Staten Island state Sen. Diane Savino over ...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A comment left by one lawmaker on another's Facebook page led a third politician to slam the comment Friday, in the kind of political squabble capable only in the age of social media.

Lisa Grey, the Republican who is challenging State Sen. Diane Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn), slammed Ms. Savino in a press release over a brief comment the senator made on the Facebook page of fellow Island politician and Ms. Savino's friend, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-Mid-Island).

Ms. Malliotakis posted predicting that Republican and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would win the presidential election.

Ms. Savino commented beneath it, "...get ready to hand over your shoes and get back in the kitchen! but, don't worry I am sure daddy will take care of all us girls!"

Ms. Grey took issue with the comment, saying it took "demagoguery to unprecedented heights and takes political discourse to new lows."

"It is a statement so blatantly ignorant that in ordinary times it would scarcely deserve mention, but since the Democratic Party, with no record of accomplishment to run on, has decided to create a fictional 'war on women,' remarks like this must be called what they are: distortions told by unthinking members of a desperate party," Ms. Grey said in a statement.

"It is a shame that one who is supposed to represent ALL of her constituency, male and female, Republican and Democrat, has shown a willingness to smear and belittle so many of them. Indeed, when such poison is spewed it splashes everywhere, and even taints those members of her own party who rightly believe that elections should be about issues and policies, not mud-slinging and innuendo," Ms. Grey continued.

The "odd couple" friendship of the Democratic state senator and Republican assemblywoman is well known.?

Ms. Savino said in a brief telephone interview Saturday that she and Ms. Malliotakis are personal friends and when they talk on Facebook, it's a personal conversation.

"It is sad and unfortunate that my opponent would attempt to use what is political banter of two friends of opposite parties for her own purposes. Perhaps if she had opinions of her own on any issue she might be able to join the conversation," Ms. Savino said in a statement.

Still, Ms. Savino defended her right to speak out about issues important to women.

"That being said on the eve of the Republican convention where her party is still debating what it means to be legitimately raped, I'm going to continue to speak out loudly and passionately about women's rights and issues; whether it be choice, economic opportunities, access to daycare, after school programs and women's health and wellness issues," Ms. Savino said in the statement.

"Up until now I had not heard my opponent issue a single word about any issue that matters to the people of my district, whether they be men, women or children. When she personally, voices her opinion I will be more than happy to respond," she continued.

For her part, Ms. Malliotakis said Facebook and Twitter have been interesting forms of debate and contact with her peers and her constituents.

"I'm friends with both women," Ms. Malliotakis said of Ms. Savino and Ms. Grey. "Obviously Diane and I have different ideological views. I certainly don't agree with her comments on the Republican Party, nor do I expect to agree with her on most political issues."

But Ms. Malliotakis did defend the GOP's record on women.

"If you look at history, the Republican party led the women's suffrage movement. It was the Republican Senate that pushed for giving women the right to vote, so the Republican party certainly played a role in the history of advancement of women," Ms. Malliotakis said.

Auto Insurance, Scaredy-Cats and the Rollers of the Dice - NYTimes ...

In this weekend?s Your Money column, I try to lay out the facts and odds that lay behind the question of whether any of us have enough auto insurance. Some people look at the long odds of a bad wreck and buy the minimum amount that their state requires. Others buy as much as they can, figuring that it?s better to be safe than to be sorry.

So to the rollers of the dice, who have bought little insurance over the decades and have bet that they wouldn?t ever be facing down a large claim, I ask this: Have you ever regretted that choice? Do you still feel comfortable with it?

As for the risk-averse, will you be upset decades from now if you?ve shelled out all of that extra money for premiums and never once made a claim or been subject to one?

In other words, what?s the right way to think about these questions ? and how do (and should) our feelings affect our efforts to reckon with the odds?

Otel brings down the cost for VoIP | IT-Online

Otel Telecoms has become the first licenced national telecoms provider to offer enterprises a low-cost leased line package to enable stable and clear VoIP connections.

Offering the service through its channel partners nationwide, Otel has already deployed over 100 connections during its two-month long beta test phase.

?We believe this fundamentally changes the competitive landscape in South Africa,? says Otel?s last mile connectivity specialist, Senzo Nkumane.

?Otel Telecoms offer businesses a Cisco-based enterprise-grade leased line for much less ? and it uses the power and flexibility of our broadband network to create an attractively priced all-in-one communications solution that none of our competitors who use ADSL can match in stability, affordability and voice clarity,? he adds.

Last year, the rise in popularity of uncapped ADSL increased Internet usage, with video streaming, online music and large file download becoming the norm. This, in turn, added additional pressure on already over-contended ADSL exchanges.

The negative impact is that VoIP call quality over ADSL has deteriorated over time, with jitter, lost words and dropped calls causing frustration for business owners.

?It has become clear that ADSL has been relegated to a technology for residential use, where the ADSL exchanges are under less pressure,? explains Mohammad Patel, CEO of Otel Telecoms. ?Until Telkom completes the roll out of the 3700 MSANS, it has become impossible to run business internet and VoIP over ADSL.?

The new Otel Telecoms leased line solution is based on the stable, trusted and readily available national SDSL network.

Nkumane explains: ?Our aim is to move the client onto a stable platform. We will install fibre where available. If not, we?ll use copper until the exchange is upgraded.? Ultimately, we need to provide clear voice and quality Internet connections.?

The company?s eight-channel VoIP link retails for R599, while a symmetric 1:4 contention uncapped leased line Internet service is R2?499. A Cisco router is included for the duration of the contract.

Lance Armstrong to be stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? With stunning swiftness, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Thursday night it will strip Lance Armstrong of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles after he dropped his fight against drug charges that threatened his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists of all time.

Travis Tygart, USADA's chief executive, said Armstrong would also be hit with a lifetime ban on Friday. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, he could lose other awards, event titles and cash earnings while the International Olympic Committee might look at the bronze medal he won in the 2000 Games.

Armstrong, who retired last year, effectively dropped his fight by declining to enter USADA's arbitration process ? his last option ? because he said he was weary of fighting accusations that have dogged him for years. He has consistently pointed to the hundreds of drug tests he passed as proof of his innocence while piling up Tour titles from 1999 to 2005.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough.' For me, that time is now," Armstrong said. He called the USADA investigation an "unconstitutional witch hunt."

"I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999," he said. "The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today ? finished with this nonsense."

USADA reacted quickly and treated Armstrong's decision as an admission of guilt, hanging the label of drug cheat on an athlete who was a hero to thousands for overcoming life-threatening testicular cancer and for his foundation's support for cancer research.

"It is a sad day for all of us who love sport and athletes," Tygart said. "It's a heartbreaking example of win at all costs overtaking the fair and safe option. There's no success in cheating to win."

Tygart said the agency had the power to strip the Tour titles, though Armstrong disputed that.

"USADA cannot assert control of a professional international sport and attempt to strip my seven Tour de France titles," he said. "I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours."

Still to be heard from was the sport's governing body, the International Cycling Union, which had backed Armstrong's legal challenge to USADA's authority and in theory could take the case before the international Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Tygart said UCI was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it" as a signer of the World Anti-Doping Code.

"They have no choice but to strip the titles under the code," he said.

USADA maintains that Armstrong has used banned substances as far back as 1996, including the blood-booster EPO and steroids as well as blood transfusions ? all to boost his performance.

The 40-year-old Armstrong walked away from the sport in 2011 without being charged following a two-year federal criminal investigation into many of the same accusations he faces from USADA.

The federal probe was closed in February, but USADA announced in June it had evidence Armstrong used banned substances and methods ? and encouraged their use by teammates. The agency also said it had blood tests from 2009 and 2010 that were "fully consistent" with blood doping.

Included in USADA's evidence were emails written by Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service teammate Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title after a positive drug test. Landis' emails to a USA Cycling official detailed allegations of a complex doping program on the team.

USADA also said it had 10 former Armstrong teammates ready to testify against him. Other than suggesting they include Landis and Tyler Hamilton, both of whom have admitted to doping offenses, the agency has refused to say who they are or specifically what they would say.

"There is zero physical evidence to support (the) outlandish and heinous claims," Armstrong said. "The only physical evidence here is the hundreds of (doping) controls I have passed with flying colors."

Armstrong sued USADA in Austin, where he lives, in an attempt to block the case and was supported by the UCI. A judge threw out the case on Monday, siding with USADA despite questioning the agency's pursuit of Armstrong in his retirement.

"USADA's conduct raises serious questions about whether its real interest in charging Armstrong is to combat doping, or if it is acting according to less noble motives," such as politics or publicity, U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks wrote.

Even if UCI and USADA differ on the Tour titles, the ultra-competitive Armstrong has still done something virtually unthinkable for him: He quit before a fight is over.

It was a stunning move for an athlete who built his reputation on not only beating cancer, but forcing himself through grueling offseason workouts no one else could match, then crushing his rivals in the Alps and the Pyrenees.

"Today I turn the page. I will no longer address this issue, regardless of the circumstances," he said. "I will commit myself to the work I began before ever winning a single Tour de France title: serving people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities."

Armstrong could have pressed his innocence in USADA's arbitration process, which would have included a hearing during which evidence against him would have been presented. But the cyclist has said he believes most people have already made up their minds about whether he's a fraud or a persecuted hero.

Although he had already been crowned a world champion and won individual stages at the Tour de France, Armstrong was still relatively unknown in the U.S. until he won the epic race for the first time in 1999. It was the ultimate comeback tale: When diagnosed with cancer, doctors had given him less than a 50 percent chance of survival before surgery and brutal cycles of chemotherapy saved his life.

Armstrong's riveting victories, his work for cancer awareness and his gossip-page romances with rocker Sheryl Crow, fashion designer Tory Burch and actress Kate Hudson made him a figure who transcended sports.

His dominance of the Tour de France elevated the sport's popularity in America to unprecedented levels. His story and success helped sell millions of the "Livestrong" plastic yellow wrist bracelets, and enabled him to enlist lawmakers and global policymakers to promote cancer awareness and research. His Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised nearly $500 million since its founding in 1997.

Jeffery C. Gervey, chairman of the foundation, issued a statement of support saying:

"Faced with a biased process whose outcome seems predetermined, Lance chose to put his family and his foundation first," Gervey said. "The leadership of the Lance Armstrong Foundation remain incredibly proud of our founder's achievements, both on and off the bike."

Created in 2000, USADA is recognized by Congress as the official anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States. Its investigators joined U.S. agents during the federal investigation of Armstrong. Tygart dismissed Armstrong's lawsuit as an attempt at "concealing the truth," saying the agency is motivated by one goal ? exposing cheaters.

Armstrong had tense public disputes with USADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, some former teammates and assistants and even Greg LeMond, the first American to win the Tour de France.

"He had a right to contest the charges," WADA President John Fahey said after Armstrong's announcement. "He chose not to. The simple fact is that his refusal to examine the evidence means the charges had substance in them."

Others close to Armstrong were caught up in the investigations, too: Johan Bruyneel, the coach of Armstrong's teams, and three members of the medical staff and a consultant were also charged. Bruyneel is taking his case to arbitration, while two medical team staffers and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari didn't formally contest the charges and were issued lifetime ban by USADA. Ferrari later said he was innocent.

Questions surfaced even as Armstrong was on his way to his first Tour victory. He was leading the 1999 race when a trace amount of a banned anti-inflammatory corticosteroid was found in his urine; cycling officials said he was authorized to use a small amount of a cream to treat saddle sores.

After Armstrong's second victory in 2000, French judicial officials investigated his Postal Service team for drug use. That investigation ended with no charges, but the allegations kept coming.

Armstrong was criticized for his relationship with Ferrari, who was banned by Italian authorities over doping charges in 2002. Former personal and team assistants accused Armstrong of having steroids in an apartment in Spain and disposing of syringes that were used for injections.

In 2004, a Dallas-based promotions company initially refused to pay him a $5 million bonus for winning his sixth Tour de France because it wanted to investigate allegations raised by media in Europe. Testimony in that case included former teammate Frankie Andreu and his wife, Betsy, saying Armstrong told doctors during his 1996 cancer treatments that he had taken a cornucopia of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs.

Two books published in Europe, "L.A. Confidential" and "L.A. Official," also raised doping allegations and, in 2005, French magazine L'Equipe reported that retested urine samples from the 1999 Tour showed EPO use.

Armstrong fought every accusation with denials and, in some cases, lawsuits against media outlets that reported them.

He retired in 2005 and almost immediately considered a comeback before deciding to stay on the sidelines ? in part because he didn't want to keep answering doping questions.

"I'm sick of this," Armstrong said in 2005. "Sitting here today, dealing with all this stuff again, knowing if I were to go back, there's no way I could get a fair shake ? on the roadside, in doping control, or the labs."

Three years later, Armstrong was 36 and itching to ride again. He came back to finish third in the 2009 Tour de France.

Armstrong raced again in 2010 under the cloud of the federal investigation. Early last year, he quit the sport for good, making a brief return as a triathlete until the USADA investigation shut him down.

During his sworn testimony in the dispute over the $5 million bonus, Armstrong said he wouldn't take drugs because he had too much to lose.

"(The) faith of all the cancer survivors around the world. Everything I do off the bike would go away, too," Armstrong said then. "And don't think for a second I don't understand that. It's not about money for me. Everything. It's also about the faith that people have put in me over the years. So all of that would be erased."

Writing for Real Estate Publications - John K. Borchardt

August 22, 2012

| printable version

Writing about real estate opens many potential markets: big city, small city and suburban newspapers as well as consumer and trade magazines. Magazine markets may be local, regional or national in their coverage. Occasionally, a real estate subject such as the rise of World Trade Center 1 (the Freedom Tower), on Ground Zero of the World Trade Center, is national news, resulting in syndicated newspaper articles. Additional research can turn a subject that starts as a one-off local story, such as covering a local warehouse roof with solar panels to generate electricity, can also be written as a national trend story.

The Great Recession and other business developments have resulted in many changes in real estate markets and practices resulting in many real estate topics for discussion in articles. Article ideas may be as close as your own neighborhood. For example, what is happening to those former big box stores on the highway and the empty store fronts in area shopping malls?

Trade magazines of interest to developers, property managers, and other real estate professionals offer writing opportunities. These include Area Development, Properties Magazine, and Site Selection. Besides people working in the real estate industry, the readers of these magazines often include those working in urban planning, building design and construction, property management and attorneys dealing with legal matters relating to real estate.
I never considered writing for these magazines until the recent recession reduced the ranks of my magazine clients. Since then, some of these magazines have become good markets for me.

Impact of Business Developments

I came into this market through a 'side door'. The Great Recession began in 2008-2009 and pharmaceutical industry mergers were resulting in the closure of large research centers employing 3,000 people or more. What was happening to these facilities, many of them built quite recently? What impact did their closure have on employment of laboratory professionals? As a science writer, I wondered about the answers to these questions. In answering these and other questions, I wrote an article for a chemical and pharmaceutical industry trade publication, Laboratory Management. I had written for this publication before and was able to capitalize on my credibility with the editor to sell an article that was actually on a quite different subject than the topics I usually covered for this magazine.

I then wrote a second article on the same subject but from a very different perspective for a quite different market, Area Development Magazine. This magazine had virtually no readership overlap with Laboratory Management but I was able to capitalize on my earlier sale to sell a manuscript to Area Development. My focus was on the sale of these laboratories to new owners, which were seldom large pharmaceutical companies, and the impact of the sales on the communities around the sold laboratories.

I capitalized on my sale to Area Development and my expertise as a science writer to sell additional articles to this publication. These articles included government requirements for closing large industrial sites in an environmentally responsible manner. Local and state governments often offered reduced taxes to companies to persuade them to build new facilities in their jurisdictions. This often became an important aspect of my real estate market articles.

My articles about the closure of large research centers got me interested in a related subject: the closure of large military bases and their redevelopment for other purposes by both the private and public sectors. This subject resulted in additional article sales to real estate magazines. My expertise and credibility as a science write helped me to generate both story ideas and sales of additional articles to real estate magazines. For example, the growing nanotechnology industry is resulting in the construction of new production plants and revitalizing communities.

The bankruptcy and closure of big box and department store chains has been widely covered in major newspapers, business newspapers, and business magazines. Reading these articles prompted me to wonder what was happening to the large regional warehouses that these stores used to supply their establishments with merchandise. I ended up with a somewhat different story than I had anticipated, instead writing about how operators of large warehouses were installing solar panels on the large flat roofs of their warehouses, resulting in significant supplemental income from electricity sales.

Newspaper markets as big and as well known as the Wall Street Journal and New York Times as well as small town and suburban newspapers such as the Duncan Banner often carry real estate articles. City business newspapers such as the Houston Business Journal and Crain's Detroit Business publish articles on real estate-related subjects. The key for a freelancer is taking a press release or published article in a local publication and expanding the subject, making it suitable for a regional or national publication.

I have neither special expertise in real estate nor any experience in this area other than shopping for the houses I have lived in. However, I was able to capitalize on my experience in writing science-related business articles to make additional sales to real estate publications and then build on this success to write non-science-related articles.
