?I will provide a good education and training for Dhamma school teachers if elected to the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). Only then will we be able to create a better future generation. Good housing will be provided for the underprivileged,? said Vijitha Kadiragonna, a candidate contesting for the CMC from Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA) during an interview with the Daily News.
?Vocational training will be provided for those with low educational qualifications. Free school books will be provided for children and there will be many other services,? he said.
Following are extracts from the interview:
Q ? Who will win the CMC?
A ? This is a close race. There are many parties and groups contesting this time. There are around 15 candidates from independent groups. Therefore, it is a very tough contest.
Q ? Why did you decide to contest from the DUA?
A ? I was a UNPer from the beginning and for decades I remained with the party. My father introduced late President R. Premadasa to A.E. Goonasinghe and got the opportunity to contest for Colombo. I worked for the Shri Sucharitha Movement as its vice chairman. I contested for the CMC from the UNP in 1997 and 2002. This time I was prevented from contesting. Therefore, I am contesting from the DUA.
Q ? Why and who prevented you from contesting from the UNP ticket?
A ? In 1997, I was given an opportunity to contest for the CMC by late Gamini Athukorala under the direction of Hema Premadasa. I am grateful Athukorala and Hema Premadasa for giving me that opportunity. I contested in 2002 and won. In 2002, I was not given the opportunity to contest in the Provincial Council Election. I was then invited to join the UPFA but I stayed back because of the promises made to me by the UNP leaders. But this time they failed to keep the promise and provide me a chance to contest for the CMC from the UNP ticket. They appointed another person as their mayoral candidate instead of me. Sajith Premadasa, MP requested nominations from the UNP leader on my behalf but he refused to grant it. The UNP leader was told baseless stories about me by another leading UNP politician from Kotte. Then the leader of DUA Nazeer Ahammed invited me and I joined his party. I wish to thank Minister Mervyn Silva for inviting me to join the UPFA. I appreciate his invitation a lot.
Q ? What do you think about the UNP?s election campaign and its candidates?
A ? All UNP supporters whom I met during my election campaign told me that they will never vote for the UNP as long as its present leader leads it. They said they are waiting for Sajith Premadasa to take over the leadership and only then will they vote for the UNP. They have laid much confidence on him because of the services carried out by late President R. Premadasa for the underprivileged people in Colombo. They think that Sajith Premadasa will serve the poor just as his father. The people in other areas believe the same. They want the policies of the late President implemented.
Q -What are the burning issues of the CMC?
A -Housing is one issue. The lack of education for poor children and their lack of income are other issues. There are many localities with wooden houses. They do not have any facilities. The children do not get a proper education. The current Charity Allowance paid for the needy which is only Rs. 600 is not adequate at all. At the moment, they are apprehensive about their future. But the people have faith in President Mahinda Rajapaksa because he eliminated terrorism.
Q ? What do you have to offer for the people if elected?
A ? I will provide a good education and training for Dhamma school teachers. Only then will we be able to create a better future generation. Good housing will be provided for the underprivileged, as done by late President R. Premadasa.
Vocational training will be provided for those with low educational qualifications. Free school books will be provided for children and there will be many other services. The CMC gets Rs. 2.5 million from the decentralized fund. This was commenced when Karu Jayasuriya MP was the Colombo Mayor. It was gradually increased to the present amount. It can be utilized to provide facilities for the people.

LOS ANGELES ? Ellen DeGeneres says she's fine after feeling chest pains that prompted paramedics to respond to the Burbank studio where her daytime talk show is taped.
The comedian says in a statement issued Monday that she doesn't know what caused the chest pain "but it's fine."
DeGeneres says she started having chest pains Sunday night and woke up feeling tightness and heaviness in her chest. She compared the feeling to having two cats on her chest.
She said the pains lingered when she came to work, so she called 911 "to be safe." She joked the paramedics may have overreacted, saying multiple trucks and ambulances showed up on the Warner Brothers lot and appeared "like one marching band short of a parade."
She thanked the medical responders "for caring so much."

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2011) ? A genomic study of chronic blood cancer -- a precursor to leukemia -- has discovered gene mutations that could enable diagnosis using only a blood test, avoiding the need for an invasive and painful bone marrow biopsy.
Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute identified the SF3B1 gene as being frequently mutated in myelodysplasia, one of the most common forms of blood cancer. Myelodysplasia is particularly prevalent among people over the age of 60, and often the only symptom is anemia, which makes it a challenge to give a positive diagnosis. Patients with mutations in the SF3B1 gene frequently had a specific abnormality of red blood cells in their bone marrow, called ring sideroblasts.
The findings have significant potential for clinical benefit, as the disease is often under-diagnosed. It is hoped that patients will soon be able to be screened for mutations in the SF3B1 gene through a single blood test.
"This discovery illustrates the promise of genome sequencing in cancer," says Dr Elli Papaemmanuil, lead author from the Sanger Institute. "We believe that by identifying SF3B1, and working to characterize the underlying biology of this disease, we will be able to build improved diagnosis and treatment protocols.
"Significantly, our analysis showed that patients with the SF3B1 mutation had a better overall chance of survival compared to those without the mutation. This suggests that the SF3B1 mutations drive a more benign form of myelodysplasia."
In order to piece together the genomic architecture of myelodysplasia, the team sequenced all genes in the genome of nine patients with the disease. To their surprise, six had mutations in the SF3B1 gene. To expand their analysis, the researchers sequenced the SF3B1 gene in 2,087 samples across many common cancers.
In myelodysplasia, SF3B1 mutations were found in 20.3 per cent of all patients, and in 65 per cent of those patients with ring sideroblasts, making it one of the most frequently mutated genes so far discovered in this disease. Researchers found mutations of the same gene in up to 5 per cent of a range of other common cancers, such as other leukemias, breast cancer and kidney cancer.
"Anemia affects 1 in 10 people over the age of 65, and we cannot easily find a cause for the anemia in a third of cases," says Peter Campbell, senior author, from the Sanger Institute and a practicing Haematologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. "To diagnose myelodysplasia, we often have to resort to an invasive and painful bone marrow biopsy, but we hope this and future genetic insights will provide more straightforward diagnosis for patients through a simple blood test."
"Ever since I first saw these unusual and damaging blood cells -- ring sideroblasts -- down the microscope while training to become a haematologist, I have been fascinated by them and determined to find a cause. To discover a major genetic clue to their origins is very exciting, and I look forward to piecing together how the mutations cause these curious cells to develop and lead to this disease."
The SF3B1 gene encodes a core component of RNA splicing, an important editing mechanism that controls how the genome's message is delivered to the cell. The team discovered a strong association between the gene and the presence of ring sideroblasts, making it the first gene to be strongly associated with a specific feature of the disease. Ring sideroblasts are abnormal precursors to mature red blood cells with a partial or complete ring of iron-laden mitochondria (energy generators) surrounding the nucleus of the cell. Their presence is frequently associated with anemia.
"These genetic discoveries are very important and could potentially assist clinicians when diagnosing blood cancers in patients, avoiding the need for invasive bone marrow biopsies. Myelodysplasia is becoming increasingly prevalent in people over 60, and cases will continue to rise with our increasing aging population, particularly among those who suffer from anemia," says Dr David Grant, Scientific Director at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. "We are delighted to have supported research into the genomic architecture of myelodysplasia which will contribute towards making a difference for the diagnosis and treatment for patients."
The study was a project for the International Cancer Genome Consortium, a forum for collaborations among the world's leading cancer and genomic research.

The teachers have always analyzed by politicians, parents, media. Each expresses advice, with more or less valid arguments to obtain the education that young. In addition, some international organizations like the European Union and UNESCO have reported that school failure is greatly increased in some developed countries.
In recent decades, there are two factors that have performed the functions of school seriously affectedTeachers. On the one hand, knowledge is not regarded as valid today are the same as before. For example, the study of the humanities, because new technologies that have enabled access to more information, more often than not, devalued superficial information. In fact, the idea of a wise teacher is old fashioned. This kind of teacher is an endangered species. Some philosophers believe that the challenge for people who are able to learn to use their knowledge to createable to continue their own training, in short, people who are able to constantly be looking for information. As a result, new teachers will be turned into a consultant to guide their students in learning. However, the reality is that there are teachers who know a lot about her subject, but they are very incompetent, as they share their knowledge.
On the other hand, today's families are very different from earlier decades. There are moreKinds of families today, but most of them have one common denominator: the parents have less time with their children because of stress and competitiveness of modern society. Therefore, the parents ask for more services for educational institutions. It is no exaggeration to say that it is their biggest concern for many parents, that schools and high schools just keep an eye on their children while they work. This is one of the worst aspects of the development of the family in recent decades. InPast learning, the children values ??such as respect, tolerance and discipline in their families. On the contrary, many of these children lack social quality when they arrive at school. This explains why there are so many cases of indiscipline, and why so many teachers feel depressed. All agents in our society (teachers, parents, government and the media) are responsible for the training of new generations. However, they have forgotten their firstTasks are the parents.
We discover something new when I point out that education is the best way to free the citizens who contribute to making the development of the rich nations. Here is an example of classical Greece. If Sparta brought his children to be bullied, Athens had them participate in their democracy. Learn the Greek is good enough today, especially in education. We must not forget that the lessonssocial missions more important, not only for our children but also for the prosperity of our societies.

They serve as being a manual to a affected person and his family members to understand what they are able to anticipate when they select a specific kind of therapy or if they ought to think about one whatsoever instead of just choose for discomfort relievers and sedation.
Colon cancer is really a illness with the decrease a part of this enzymatic program impacting the colon, rectum and appendix. It?s also known as colorectal or big bowel cancer. It?s the 2nd top reason for cancer associated fatalities within the Western Globe.
Colon cancer when discovered within the early phases is among the most curable of cancers, by approximately 90%. Happily, the colon cancer survival prices have already been steadily enhancing more than the previous twenty many years, simply because of enhanced screening which makes therapy feasible in the early curable phases. You will find more than one million survivors with the illness within the US these days.
As with most cancers, prognosis is decided through the stage at which the illness is diagnosed, the later on the stage at which the illness is diagnosed, the decrease the survival charge. The Journal with the Nationwide Cancer Institute provides these general survival prices for colon cancer within the US: 93% at stage one, 85% at stage 2A, 72% at stage 2B, 83% at stage 3A, 64% at stage 3B, 44% at stage 3C and 8% at stage four.

Catholic Charities to suffer 50% cut if state cancels contracts
9/20/2011 4:18:00 PM
By DOUG FINKE
-The State Journal-Register
The four dioceses are asking Sangamon County Circuit Judge John Schmidt to reconsider his Aug. 18 decision that the Department of Children and Family Services can terminate its long-standing contracts with Catholic Charities to provide foster care and adoption services.
In the documents, Roach said he asked his staff to prepare an accounting of the financial impact to the agencies if the contracts are terminated. They determined it would eliminate about $5 million of Catholic Charities' projected $10 million in revenue for the 2012 budget year.
"Financially, for Catholic Charities in Springfield, it would be devastating," Roach said in an interview Monday. "We believe Catholic Charities would be able to survive it, but our presence would be greatly diminished in a number of communities." The Springfield diocese covers 28 counties.
Catholic Charities' remaining $5 million in income is drawn from a variety of sources, including government funds, United Way and private donations, Roach said. The money allows the agency to run things like counseling, financial assistance and senior services programs, as well as St. John's Breadline.
Staff already leaving
Catholic Charities' staff would also be cut about in half, Roach said.
The agency employs about 190 people throughout the diocese. Losing the foster care and adoption services contracts would cause the agency to terminate "all or nearly all" of the 80 staff members working for those services. That includes caseworkers, case aides, therapists, counselors and managers, he said.
Four caseworkers have left already, Roach said. "I was told it was because of the uncertainty of the contract," he said.
Moreover, he said in the court documents, "I am informed by a substantial number of my staff members and foster parents that they will not continue working in a foster care system that excludes Catholic agencies, including Catholic Charities, from participation."
If all of the employees must be let go, Roach said, the agency will owe them $100,000 for unused vacation time and other costs.
Over the last five years, Catholic Charities has spent more than $1.4 million to buy and improve buildings and equipment throughout the diocese to continue its programs. "While we may be able to recoup some of these costs, Catholic Charities will suffer substantial losses in any attempted 'fire sale' of those assets," Roach said in the documents.
No transfers yet
In the documents, Roach also said DCFS recently informed the agency that it is delaying foster-parent payments by two weeks, resulting in the agency having to cover $140,000 in additional costs.
DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe said he wasn't aware of any slowdown in foster-parent payments. Those payments have been given a priority despite the state's financial problems, Marlowe said.
DCFS terminated contracts with the Catholic Charities agencies because the organization has refused to place foster-care children with unmarried couples, including those in civil unions. State officials believe state law requires placements in those homes. Catholic Charities said its religious beliefs are being violated and the organization should not be forced to make the placements.
Schmidt ruled that, despite its 40-year contractual relationship with the state, Catholic Charities does not have a property right in the contracts. He did not address religious-freedom issues.
What's next
A hearing is tentatively scheduled for early October on Catholic Charities' request that Circuit Judge John Schmidt reconsider his decision that the state of Illinois can terminate its foster care and adoption services contracts with Catholic Charities.
Department of Children and Family Services spokesman Kendall Marlowe said none of Catholic Charities' foster care cases have been transferred to new agencies yet. "We are still in the process of preparing for the transition," Marlowe said. "It's more important that it be done right than by any specific date."

Most people deal with their daily hectic schedules. Most of the time, their dietary needs tend to be neglected because they feel that eating a balanced diet will take them too much time. Thus, they resort on eating easy-to-prepare meals and fast-food products. However, these poor eating habits can often lead to medical problems and nutritional deficiencies. One of the common nutritional deficiencies is the iron deficiency. This problem often occurs when a person doesn?t eat enough iron-rich foods. Iron provides several vital functions in the body. Low amounts of iron in the body can cause iron-related disease such as anemia, which in turn can lead to other severe medical problems.
Iron is one of the important minerals within the body, as it provides a lot of functions that are essential in maintaining the normal functioning of the body systems. It is utilized in the production of hemoglobin and enzymes that are required in regulating the wellness of the body. Also, it aids in the transportation of oxygen in the blood to the different parts of the body and acts as a catalyst in most metabolic reactions that are essential for cell growth. This element is vital in boosting the immune system and in the proper functioning of the liver. Its current recommended daily allowance in the body is 18 milligrams.
To maintain the recommended iron level inside the body, the best way to do is to eat foods rich in iron. Individuals having low levels of iron are always weak and inactive compared to people with normal iron levels. Taking iron-rich foods regularly will free a person from the risk of developing anemia, keeping a person hale and healthy. Below are the foods high in iron list that prevents the occurrence of iron-related disorders.
1. Chocolate and Cocoa Powder. Some may think it?s a junk food, but chocolates are providing health benefits to individuals especially those with iron-related problems. You fall in love and also going to engage with the same person whom you love and like very much. So presenting engagement rings on the day of engagement you are making your mind to buy diamond engagement rings, then one of the most important things you must do is get acquainted with the 5C?s of diamond ? color, cut, clarity, carat and fifth C is cost of diamond as well.
People have developed a misconception that colorless diamond is less pure as compared to colorful but reality is far away from this fact. Colorless diamonds are more pure and expensive as well. Jewelers grade diamonds on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). Anything more yellow than D is considered fancy and is much more expensive.
Majority of people who do not know much about diamond think that that cut refers to the shape of the diamond. But cut of diamond means the way the diamond was faceted to permit light to reflect from it. In an efficiently cut diamond, the light enters into the diamond and reflects straight back to the viewer?s eye. A proper cut of diamond is very important because it enhances the real beauty of diamond and diamond engagement rings.

It is also true that those people who do not know about diamond cannot evaluate cut of the diamond. Therefore, it is very important for you to take GIA certificate which ensure the quality of diamond engagement rings. Cut can be graded like ideal, premium, very good, good, fair, and poor. Anyone who has a family with drivers and more than one vehicle or full coverage on said vehicle(s) knows that car insurance is not cheap, but there are some tips that can help you locate cheap car insurance. If you are interested in finding out ways to get your premiums lowered, continue to read this passage.
In most cases, car insurance quotes are quick and easy to attain. You don?t need to go to an agent to get a premium quote; you can answer a few questions online and will result in competitive premium quotes with brand name insurance carriers.
Below are 7 ways that you can save money on car insurance and the basis for this information is from my own policy that I carry with Progressive Automobile Insurance. Keep in mind that not every insurance carrier is the same and will offer their own discount programs but tend to be similar from company to company.
Electronic Funds Transfer - If I set up an automatic payment option with my bank, Progressive will supply my policy with a discount of $40.00. I currently do not have this option activated as I can foresee having the possibility of an insufficient fund issue.
Minor child - I have had my auto insurance with Progressive for over 2 years and list a child under the age of 19 with a license or permit, Progressive will offer "good grades" discount, and an "accident free" discount for each of the children listed. The child has to carry a "B" average for the entire school year for this to take effect. The child will also need to be accident free for 2 years.
Homeowner - This offer is for homeowners only. Progressive provides a discount for those customers that own their own home. This will not include rental properties or other living conditions.
Pain in full - This is for those customers that have enough cash on hand to pay for their entire premium in one lump sum rather than making payments throughout the year. Progressive enables a rather large discount for this option. Unfortunately, I won?t ever be able to pay my several thousand dollars premium in one lump sum.
Distant Student - Do you have a college student away at school and are under the age of 23? If so, there is a discount program with Progressive insurance for your policy. This is stipulated that the child needs to be living out of the home and not have a car at their alternate address (college address). I will be taking this discount starting in the fall, 2011.
Multi-Policy - Do you have several policies with the same carrier? If so, Progressive supplies a discount for their customers that have more than one policy. I also have this discount applied to my account as we have a motorcycle policy as well.
5 Year accident free - this one speaks for itself and is widely used amongst most insurance carriers. Keep your license clean as well (no traffic violations) and you will see a discount for "good behavior".
So, there is such a thing as cheap car insurance. Shop around for the policy that best suits your needs. There are insurance carriers online that will supply you with 4 or 5 competitive premiums and from different brand name carriers so you don?t have to fill out a new application form for every premium quote you get. This is a very nice option to get when shopping for cheap car insurance.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ? The clock struck midnight and the game still hadn't started.
Loaded up on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and stir crazy from three hours spent waiting out a rain delay, No. 8 Oklahoma State showed its offense can click at any hour in a 59-33 victory against Tulsa early Sunday morning.
Brandon Weeden threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns, Joseph Randle ran for 128 yards and three more scores and the Cowboys won easily despite sleepwalking at times ? and understandably so.
Originally scheduled to start at 9:10 p.m., the game didn't get going until 16 minutes after midnight and didn't get over until 3:35 a.m.
"I've played five years of minor-league baseball, had some late starts and 20-inning games and still nothing really compares to this," Weeden said. "This is a first."
The NCAA doesn't keep records showing where the game ranks among the latest to start or finish, but the bizarre circumstances will make this game hard to forget for anyone who stayed up for it.
"I'm not real excited about playing at that time, to be honest with you," Cowboys coach Mike Gundy said. "There comes a certain point in the middle of the morning your body's not used to functioning. Whether young people stay up late at night or not, they don't exert themselves at 2 and 3 in the morning.
"I had concerns about injuries on both teams. I was really concerned about losing players."
Tulsa lost starting quarterback G.J. Kinne to a knee injury in the first quarter and then fell hopelessly behind as replacement Kalen Henderson struggled to get going and the defense couldn't get stops.
The Cowboys built up a 45-6 lead less than 6 minutes into the second half and showed that a change in location, an extended weather delay and an odd start time did little to change the results in a rematch of a 65-28 win against Tulsa (1-2) last year in Stillwater.
Oklahoma State was up 41-7 at halftime in that one.
"No question, I think we took an emotional gut shot. And it took our guys almost a quarter to get back from it," Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship said. "At least that is what I sensed. I don't think they got down, but I kind of saw the wind come out of our guys a little bit."
About the only thing missing for Oklahoma State was a 100-yard receiving game from Justin Blackmon. The Biletnikoff Award winner's NCAA record run of 14 straight games in triple digits was halted. He had a 4-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter but ended up with only 57 yards.
Weeden found plenty of other targets, and Randle had scoring runs of 1, 5 and 11 yards in his third straight 100-yard rushing outing. Backfield mate Jeremy Smith added a score from 6 yards out to make it 45-6 in the third quarter, and Oklahoma State won its fifth straight in the series, but for only the third time in its last eight visits to Tulsa.
"When we won the game, everybody's obviously very excited about the game but everybody's just walking around like zombies," Weeden said. "Everybody's pretty fatigued.
"Ultimately, we won the game. Here's the deal: If you start a game this late and you end up losing the game, for our sake, it makes it a little bit tougher to swallow."
Ja'Terian Douglas had 173 yards rushing, including two touchdown runs of 80 and 42 yards, and Trey Watts added 159 yards rushing with two lost fumbles. Both players had career-highs in rushing as Tulsa rolled up 365 yards on the ground.
Henderson wound up with 104 yards on 6-for-20 passing with two TD passes to Bryan Burnham and three interceptions.
"I thought it was a pretty sloppy-played game, to be honest with you. I didn't think we played very well," Gundy said. "There was times we moved the ball. There was times we were just very average.
"We were not very good against the run and got a little bit kind of in a funk, just going through the motions."
And who could blame them?
Gundy said he's usually asleep by 10 p.m., and this game never had a chance of getting over by then.
Tulsa's band already had played the national anthem and kickoff was only a few minutes away when fans were encouraged to seek shelter on the concourses, at the Reynolds Center basketball arena or in their vehicles because of the approaching storm.
Increasingly heavy rain moved over the stadium soon after, and only one man remained in his seat as the stadium got soaked.
Tulsa offensive tackle Stetson Burnett's long brown hair flopped around as he jumped up and down to try and rile up the fans when the players jogged back onto the field for pregame warm-ups a few minutes before midnight. Before the coin flip, referee Randy Smith asked the team captains: "Are you guys ready to finally play some football?"
There was one last delay when whistles sounded just as Kevin Fitzpatrick approached the ball for the kickoff and officials reset the play clock to 25 seconds.
After all that, Oklahoma State didn't make the thousands of fans who stuck around wait long to see some excitement.
Shawn Jackson intercepted a tipped pass by Weeden to set up Fitzpatrick's 25-yard field goal for an early 3-0 Tulsa lead, but Justin Gilbert ran the ensuing kickoff back 96 yards to put the Cowboys ahead to stay.
Weeden hooked up with Hubert Anyiam for a 36-yard score on a flea flicker on Oklahoma State's next drive, and Randle took over from there with Blackmon bracketed by defenders.
Beyond cancellation, there weren't many options except to wait out the rain and play into the wee hours of the morning.
The teams don't share a weekend off this season, leaving limited options to postpone the game. And both teams face ranked opponents next Saturday. Oklahoma State opens Big 12 conference play at No. 9 Texas A&M while Tulsa is at No. 4 Boise State.
